The ALMOST fogotten

Spielberg classic...

It fell between Jaws, ET and then The Indiana Jones Trilogy and for some reason is kinda lost in discussion amongst the greatest Sci Fi Films. Maybe its nostalgia because I grew up to all of his work(As Well as Kubrick and Scorsese) but its not mentioned enough in certain discussions, even though it did tremendous numbers at the Box Office. Its a truly remarkable film. Well acted, well shot, DIFFERENT than the rest of the "Sci Fi" or "Alien" films of the time. It was typical Spielberg in his prime. Mixed genres and keeps me watching all these years later.

Yeah I think it's just "different" enough that it's like you're saying - it seems to have fallen off the radar a bit with subsequent generations of movie watchers.

But it's that difference (among other things) that makes this the enduring iconic classic it will always be for me. What a grand film!!

Yeah... You make a good point with the generational switch. It just gets lost in the mix a bit but it definitely will always hold in the hearts of many. It's so iconic. Spielberg made a SciFi Opus!!

And it practically went toe-to-toe with Star Wars, with no sequels or prequels or whatever to keep it in the culture. That's easy to get lost in.

I think this was one of the first of its kind, a big budget ufo movie that actually took itself seriously. I think it still holds up today. I just saw the part when roy thinks its a car behind him, and then it LIFTS UP and beams him, and everything starts acting funky...pretty damn scary when I first saw it! it was so surreal, it felt real to me.
