Capt. Dale Dye
Seen this umpteen times but I only just noticed the Captain in the scene on Devils' Tower just before the choppers start spraying the mountain side. Obviously uncredited. He certainly gets around.

shareDale Dye was still on active duty and apparently a combat correspondent during the time this was filmed. He did not retire from the Marine Corps until 1984. His first film credit was in 1986. I don't know where he was stationed in 1976 to 1977, but it is highly unlikely that he was anywhere near any of the filming locations for CE3K or that he appeared in any scene.

Its definitely him, you can never mistake the voice or the face. Took some screenshots. He appears at the 1:36min mark. See here π https://www.flickr.com/gp/140527240@N04/i9PGzw
shareThe Flicker url you sent contained still shots, not video. However, they confirm my opinion.
Dale Dye was an active duty captain in the Marine Corps at the time you sighted him in this movie. The person in the video snap shots has a non-regulation haircut. He also appears to be resting on his M-16 with his arm on the butt stock and the muzzle in the dirt or at the least against the ground. It might be against a rock. No Marine, not even a soldier, would do that. In fact, not even a sailor or an airman who regularly handled small arms would have a haircut like the individual in your screen snap or treat a rifle that way.
If the opportunity presents, I will watch the movie and find that scene. If I discover that he could reasonably be his face and voice (I don't think it looks like him, either. The mustache is also out of regulation and the chin is not shaped like Captain Dye's) I will come on the board and admit it. But I don't think that will happen.

No worries, I'm sticking with "It's him" hopefully you can get a chance to see it again soon. π
shareI think I remember seeing the scene we are discussing. I did not see it the last time CE3K was on, but some years back. If it is what I remember, I thought it was Dale Dye, too. But the timing just does not work. His own website shows that he enlisted in 1964, was promoted to warrant officer in 1976, converted to commissioned rank at an unspecified time, and was in Beirut, Lebanon in 1982 to 1983. He retired in 1984.
In order to retire at the 20-year mark a soldier, sailor, airman, or marine must complete 20 full years of active service. One can retire earlier only if it is for medical reasons. When that happens the individual technically does not "retire," he or she is medically discharged as unfit for duty and receives a disability pension from the Veterans Administration. Retired warriors receive their pension from the Department of Defense. They are different line items in the federal budget.
Captain Dale Dye retired from active duty in 1984, so there was no significant break in service between his enlistment in 1964 and 1984. He certainly did not leave active duty long enough to let his hair grow into a mullet. (Not reall, I'm exaggerating. But the guy in the photos has a lot of hair.)
You have definitely made me curious to see that scene again and see if I can convince myself one way or the other. I never bought the movie, so I may need to rent it on Amazon or something.

If its not him, that guy in the film you could swear it was his twin, the voice is exactly the same too. Yep first time I noticed him too after all the years of watching it. I remember reading about Vietnam and his Beirut days but nothing inbetween. Best regards π
shareI've been convinced that's Dale Dye for twenty years.
His rifle has a HUGE "starlight" type scope. I think it might be a prop because of the little radar dish thing on top. I've never seen anything like that before.
ξHe never has the barrel in the dirt in the screen shots.
It's got to be him π
