Censorship in 1977

Was there anything censored including nudity and N-word in 1977 if you saw it on ABC?

reply

It was during the new "golden age" of television. Networks (like ABC and HBO) began to offer paid channels, and since it was a subscription, the laws of censorship were (and still are) nearly nonexistent.

Also, I believe the nudity and language were more of a historic detail. The writers probably didn't want to gloss over the real story.

I saw the original broadcast. If I remember correctly, ABC ran a disclaimer before each episode citing nudity in a historical context and graphic language and violence.

May I bone your kipper, Mademoiselle?

Mrmathexpert great name, during the 70s TV movies were largely unedited. The movie Born Innocent with Linda Blair had a graphic rape scene by a group of girls to Linda Blair shown uncut. The TV movie Dummy starring LeVar Butron made in 1979 had a graphic rape of a deaf LeVar Burton in an Institution by a group of psych ward males! It wasn't until the Eighties probaly after The Burning Bed that TV movies became Unedited!

They showed some full frontal females in 77 (and also when they repeated it 2-3 years later). N- bombs were dropped, but I believe more in Roots, the next generation. Don't forget, it wasn't a slur initially. They were using Negro, but changed over the years due to the southern drawl. Wasn't the venom filled word until RTNG time (post civil war and reconstruction)

"Roots" was shown on regular broadcast television. It was not a paid channel or a subscription.

reply

And it was showed a few years back with all the nudity and 'N' words in.

reply

The N word was not censored. I don't know about nudity. But the 70s was much more progressive than it is today.

I saw part of the original airing, however anyone can surmise they didn't censor it since it was their show! By the way it's currently on Sundance.
