I watched these shows when I was four or five and kind of remember seeing an episode from one of the Bionic series that was very similar to a Hardy Boys Nancy Drew episode. They both seemed to be doing an Airport (not Airplane) ripoff where they survive an airplane crashing on a island. I swear it was pretty much the same plots, except the Boys solved a mystery and the Bionic ones used their powers to figure things out. And the set I think was the exact same set. Were these shows even filmed by the same studio? And if they were, was the studio just trying to save money?
Those are good questions. I've seen the HB adventure several times. I generally loved the show, but the airplane episode was pretty bad - pretty close to the worst HB episode, IMO.
I used to watch the Bionic shows, but can't remember the episode. HB was made by ABC and I think the Bionic shows were too, but not certain. I'll do a little research and see if I can come up with anything.
You know, I noticed a similar thing, but this time it was when The Boys were in the town of Valley View (near Bayport), in the Mystery of the Flying Courier. When Frank chased Susie/Sandra through downtown, I'd swear it was the Mayberry set from the Andy Griffith show. Especially the town square. If it was the same set, it was the AG shows where Barney catches the crook, who's in the mobile home, and drives him wrecklessly from the mobile home park to the police station. And, I think the other time AG used that set was when the rich guy wanted to get his car fixed, but had a hard time finding a mechanic on a Sunday in Mayberry. I think that's the episode anyway.
Maybe they shared lots, or sold them to each other., I don't know. If I find something out, I'll post it.
It looks like you are at least partly right. The interior of the jet had different colored seats, but walls looked similar. They definitely shared some shots of the exterior of the plane, and the storm. Also, engine 4 caught on fire, just like in the Hardy boys episode. And, they showed someone hitting the 4th motor fire extinguisher, just like on the HB episode.
The interiors of the cave are slightly different, as there were weeds in the Bionic Man cave. But, they could have added those, or used a different cave on the same island.
But, there definitely was some sharing of video footage, and perhaps sets.
You even get the same shot of motor 4 falling off, on fire.
Heck, on the Hardy boys show I've seen the same shot of them driving down the road in their van about 4 times. I think it was used 2 times in the first season alone. In the Disappearing Floor it was when they were following a suspect. In the Flying Courier they were going to the auto salvage yard.
I think it was used twice in the second season, but I can't remember the episodes right now, but I will.
Then remember the HB Safari Mystery? Shaun looks at the Rhino chasing their jeep 4 times. I'd swear each shot is the same shot!
Can you believe I found that Bionic Man episode in just a few seconds? If you're interested it's listed as Season 1, Episode2.
And the Hardy Boys episode is The Strange Fate of Flight 608. It's in the 2nd season. Both are on YouTube.
Heck, I was just watching HB episode Oh Say Can You Sing, and they used the same shot of the van near the beginning, as they do when The Boys are going to the airport near the end of Flickering Torch. I hadn't noticed that before. I also just noticed Oh Say... Was one of the episodes with the 3rd van shot. Only this time it wasn't exactly the same video footage...but it was the same road, probably just prior to them making a left hand turn in the previous video footage.
I've been trying to find all the strange little things I saw when I was a kid in the 70s. Like a late night movie starring David Jansen of The Fugitive as a chopper pilot chasing bank robbers. There's an episode of Sesame Street from 75 that's infamous and hasn't been seen since - Margaret Hamilton dressed as a witch. Scared the heck out of me and thousands of other kids.
