OMG! *stomps on floor*

Today, I got to watching the 3rd disc of the second season and got real excited that there was another Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew episode 'till I saw that it WASN'T the REAL Nancy!!!

They got rid of the REAL Nancy Drew? WHYyYyYyYyYyYyYyY!?

Because the original Nancy quit the show. She knew her days were numbered, and decided to leave before she was fired, so they replaced her with a girl who they later fired.

Poor Pamela Sue...um...Martin? I forget her name. But I cry for her.

reply

No need to cry for her, she did all right as Fallon on "Dynasty".

Okay, I just watched another episode. And not only did they replace Ned, but Nancy all of a sudden has never met him!? What the...?

Pamela Sue didn't like the fact that Nancy Drew wasn’t getting her own episodes anymore and that the network wanted her to guest star with the Hardy Boys episodes only, so she quit the show and was recast for the last 3 episodes with another actress. Ironically the last episode with Pamela Sue was the last Nancy Drew stand alone episode ever. By Season 3 Nancy Drew was written out of the show altogether. The funny thing is that I liked the Hardy Boys more when I first started watching, but now I find the Nancy Drew episodes much better and if the Network hadn’t tampered with the formula in the Second Season by recasting characters and not doing enough Nancy Drew episodes, the show might have had a fighting chance. If you watch the Third Season of the Hardy Boys you can tell that it needed Nancy Drew as well, the complimented each other and because Nancy Drew was canned that’s why the Hardy Boys didn't last very long in it's third season.

Both shows were very good but the Network kept changing the formula of the show each season, so it started losing its audience.

Not only did Nancy never meet him, but Ned was a completely different character and he didn't even work for her father anymore. It's one thing to replace actors, but it's another to actually reintroduce an already established character.

Okay, I've been watching a few of the episodes with, we'll cal her 'New Nancy', and she's not so bad. I guess I pretty much hated her for taking over Pamela Sue, but she's a good actress herself.

LOL will go with Fake Nancy (like Fake Jan from the Brady Bunch) instead. Janet Julian is a fine actress but Pamela Sue will always be Nancy Drew.

reply

Hehe, Fake Nancy. It's perfect. And I hate Fake Jan. Then again...I didn't really enjoy Real Jan, either. =P

I liked both Nancy Drew's, but it was Pamela Sue Martin's fault for leaving the show. The same thing happened on Dynasty. She would not let anybody tell her to share episodes or move to a spin off. That's her own fault. Again, I liked both, but Janet Louise Johnson was very good as Nancy Drew. They should have given her more episodes.

I hated fake nancy and i still do.
Pamela is my only nancy her preformance has held up even with so many different people playing nancy (in general not jsut in this show)

as someone who read the hardy boys/nancy drew books when the series was actually on, when Janet Louise replaced Pamela Sue, I felt that Janet Louise would have been much better if she'd been cast as Bess Marvin.

As I go back and watch all those shows I watched as a kid in the 70s & 80s, and re-watch all those ladies I had crushes on back then, and then find out most of those female actors were agonizingly annoying, it was refreshing to see such a strong actor in Pamela Sue Martin. I wasn't annoyed by her presence once. Beautiful & genuinely strong.

Refreshing old thread. I was 17 when this show aired on Network tv. I don't recall exactly anymore who I like better the boys or Drew. I think I may have liked watching the boys because they were so damned attractive. I there them work was much better.

The three seasons are streaming on Netflix right now. Watching them again I find the Hardy boys a bit annoying. The acting is good for the most part but I don't like the jabs and chastisements that Mr. Drew says to the boys. Sure he always comes to praise the boys in the end but there are subtle comments bordering on putdowns coming from Old Man Hardy that I don't think are appropriate to the show. Also, the story lines are weak and the formula of forcing a small and corny joke on the "end cap" and then freeze framing the boys smiling is trite.

But the PSM Nancy Drew episodes really hold up. Sure there are a few weak points but the show doesn't try to make Nancy out as a joke. The original three actors that play Nancy, George and Ned had great chemistry together. William Schallert as Nancy's attorney father was perfect his character was always supportive of ND.

I'm certain my life got busy with graduation and work, I only vaguely remember the changes in all three actors as well as the way their characters were rewritten in ND. Oh well...

They brought in a fake Nancy, a fake George and even a fake Ned. also, they downsized the Drew house. So disappointing.
