i am now watching the episodes if Frank's new Partner what happend to Jon in the show world was he promoted killed in real life was he kicked off the show like Micheal Jean Vencent?

Jon's character went back to Wyoming to work on the family ranch.

His contract was up and he chose to leave, tired of Erik Estrada and his representatives constantly jockeying for position over him. Once he was gone, Estrada essentially won, and proceeded to get rid of a bunch of other cast members.

When Larry Wilcox quit the series, it was explained that Jon had moved back home to Wyoming.

Aside from Larry Wilcox's well publicized departure from the series prior to the final season, a number of other cast changes were made for that season as well. The characters played by Michael Dorn, Brodie Greer and Randi Oakes (Turner, Baricza and Bonnie) were written off and replaced with no explanation.

Larry Wilcox and Erik Estrada were often said to frequently clash and not get along well with each other during production of the series. This was reported to be a factor in Wilcox's decision to quit the series. Estrada was said to be similarly displeased working with Tom Reilly, who replaced Wilcox.

Like the others have said Larry Wilcox left the series and it was explained that Jon went back to work on his family ranch.

This was later retconned in the TV reunion movie Chips '99 because in that movie it was Ponch who had left the CHP and Jon had stayed and was now Captain. Getraer had become CHP Commissioner. In the movie it was Jon who went and asked Ponch to return to the CHP. Since he had left for so many years Ponch was still ranked as a patrol officer.

The movie had a few of the recurring officers from the tv series, but they were underused. Only Grossman, Baricza and Bruce Nelson returned out of all the recurring officers that weren't the main cast. It was strange that Bruce appeared, but his brother Bobby Nelson did not.

None of the female officers from the series returned for the movie and a lot of the male recurring officers (and Harlan) were absent.
