'Fun House'-- the fraternity house episode

I just watched this episode. Definitely had its silly moments (that pizza eating scene was something else)...but overall I liked it. I thought the subplot with Bruce and the little girl (played by Poltergeist's Heather O'Rourke) was excellent. The part where they rescue her down at the border was well staged and played.

The frat house exteriors look like they were filmed at USC. The interiors were obviously on a studio soundstage. I couldn't tell where the border scene was filmed (I am sure they did not go down to San Diego or Tijuana for that), but the scene where the woman considered jumping off the cliff looked like it was filmed at Pointe Dume, north of Santa Monica near Malibu.

Another reason I liked this episode is that it gave Getraer some good comic relief scenes, since he was a member of the fraternity. Plus, Bobby had quite a bit to do.

The one thing I didn't like, not sure if it was a goof, is that it is explained Bruce is doing crossing guard duty until a traffic light is repaired but I did not see any traffic light at that intersection where they had him walk the kids. And even if there was one, I didn't see any crew working to repair anything. Also, maybe it was different in late 82/early 83 when the episode was filmed, but most people that walk school children through intersections carry a stop sign they raise when they reach the middle of the intersection. The sign, not a raised hand, is required today, so drivers can see they need to stop until the children are through the intersection and safely to the other side of the street.

Poltergeist came out in 1982. This episode was from 1983.

It was great to see Kent Dorfman was still in college five years after Animal House, lol. Stephen Furst was hilarious in this role, especially when he was teaching the French bikini girl how to speak English. Whoever gave him the fake parrot on his shoulder, kudos. The guy playing Meatball looked about forty years old, haha.

One thing I didn't get about the episode, when Ponch and Bobby chase the two rich frat guys in their van, they had plenty of time to get the license plate number. Oh well, guess I shouldn't overthink it. What do we got?! We got a D...

Watching it now. Second rip-off of Animal House with Furst (the first one was Delta House in 1979). I'd give it a D with no problem.

The highlight so far has been Bruce truly being officer friendly with the little girl. Seems like we don't have that anymore with so much militarization of police and a downward spiral in society.

Completely agree. While this is a Hollywood depiction of law enforcement, overripe with sentiment and a perfect resolution by the end of the episode, it still carries an important message. I only hope that some of today's officers caught this broadcast and it gave them a gentle reminder of how it should be.

I liked Bruce in that ep. As a matter of fact I'm getting to like him better! (Running the risk of getting diabetes by watching the scenes he's in, because they portray him to be so wholesome and sweet) LOL!!! He has really pretty blue eyes , but as a woman he doesn't do anything for me still. He's much to young seeming! I LOVE that bad boy Tom Reilly. He does have "bad boy' written all over him, even if we didn't know about his partying and Quaaludes and all !! LOL!! I still say Bruce would be better casted as Jon's little brother.

But back to yesterday's ep. Heather O'Rourke was so cute. ( poor little thing RIP) The scenes with her and Bruce were cute, and they look alike. almost like he could be her big brother, and the Mom looked like him too!

Agree with your comments regarding Bruce. They made him a little too perfect. There should have been some tiny character flaw, to indicate a more human side. Like he was always running late for something. Or he smoked as a teenager and was trying to stay away from cigarettes. Or that there was something his brother Bobby said that always hit a nerve or pushed a button. Maybe something that always went wrong on his dates with the opposite sex. He's a good character and we can always expect him to do the right thing, but he should have a few more struggles. It shouldn't all come so easily for him.

Also agree that the actress who played the distraught mother did resemble Bruce.

I liked the other actress who played the woman that kidnapped Heather O'Rouke's character. I see she did an earlier episode as a different character. She also played Ginger in one of the Gilligan's Island movies.

So far the only flaw Bruce has shown is an over-eagerness to bust perps without getting a case. This happened in the episode where Bruce spots a drug deal going down and goes off in pursuit of the dealer to no avail and some traffic mayhem. He then gets chewed out, but is allowed to assist Kathy on building a case.

And I've noticed they team Bruce up with Officer Kathy and it really becomes 'sugar overdose time" ! Having her arrest you would be like having Minnie Mouse arrest you. She doesn't seem like a cop , more like a Sunday school teacher. So the two of them together Bruce and Kathy is bubblegum and lollipop time! LOL!!

Linahan has had less screen time than Clark, so it's not an apples to apples comparison, but she has not made the same serious errors Clark was shown making such as the one that involved her friend and former CHP officer that was involved in the auto theft ring.

I see the laughable Bruce storyline will continue with his graduation to full motorcycle duty. No cars or shift work for him!

When Bruce gave the description of the woman who he saw at the school zone, I think it would have been kind of helpful if he said, "She was in a blue Fairmont wagon". You know, police type observations. In other observations, I feel sad whenever I see Heather O'Rourke.
