Episode Help! One of the best

Hello, desperately searching for the title of the episode, where the CHiPS duo are repeatedly made to look like fools, by a suave operator. If I remember the idea correctly, he lures them into wild goose chases, while he is elsewhere, and they are left with the proverbial egg on their faces. And this happens over and again.

I actually saw part of this episode way, way back in the early 80's. And for some reason, I had to leave, and couldn't see the conclusion. No doubt, the CHiPS team achieves restitution and catches the offender, but I'd love to see how they do it! Because the guy was pretty smooth and clever.

You need to get a little more specific than that. What do you mean by a suave operator? What were some of the scenes?

It was more than 30 years ago, but I do remember the suave character luring Frank and Jon into false leads or wild goose chases, then departing near the scene in his car. In other words, he could see the CHiPS officers being led down the garden path.

The ruse/crime involved this man's use of a radio to lure the cops into a false crime scene. He got away with it about 3 times in the episode. At that point, I had to leave, and alas, I never was able to view the episode again! I'm hoping now, with the internet, it will be easy.

I'm pretty sure you're talking abut the episode "Cry Wolf" from season 1. This mentally disturbed guy uses highway call boxes to report accidents that never happened. He watches from a distance as the CHP and paramedics show up. He gets away with it about three times, then they trace the last call and catch him.

Thanks very much, I will find that episode and watch it. One little nitpick though, the character I remember was suave, cool and cunning. He didn't seem mentally disturbed, but it's possible that with the passage of 30+ years, that little detail escaped me!

One can be suave, smooth and cunning and still be mentally disturbed. A sociopath can certainly fit such a description.

I just finished watching "Cry Wolf", positively NOT the episode I'm thinking of.

Maybe not even the series! This one was very lame and boring, and the character behind all the ruses, very uninteresting. The show I remember was highly intriguing, and the cops in question were constantly being made fools of, much to their immense chagrin. You very badly wanted to see how the cops would catch this suave and intractable villain. The CHiPs fake caller was a clown!

I must be confusing CHiPs with an episode of "Simon and Simon", "Hunter" or some other 80's series.

Will continue my search! Thanks anyway.

Check out Ice Cream Man (S5 E24). In it, a former CHP Sergeant was sent to prison for his part in a theft ring. After his release, working with his old gang, he uses a CHP radio to send the officers the wrong way, but I think that only happened twice in the episode.

Here's the episode's IMDB link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0534478/?ref_=ttep_ep24

A Google search will probably allow you to find it online somewhere.

Joe "We're authorized" Fontana: I can do this all day, Mitch. How about you?

Thanks, sounds very interesting. But I've now narrowed my search down to a "Hunter" episode. If it's not that one, then I don't think it can be found!
