Picture cropped on MeTV?

After watching the first couple shows now that MeTV has brought the show back, has anybody else noticed that the picture is cropped on all four sides? Watching the shows and then watching the DVDs again, it's like they zoomed in on the picture just enough to make the credits fill the entire screen with no open space like on the DVDs. It's bad enough that there are trimmed scenes to add in an extra commercial break, but why would they crop the picture?

reply

Yeah, I noticed that today as well and it was ANNOYING. (During a scene on 'Adam-12' the police car looked as long as an aircraft carrier as it drove across the screen.) I didn't get to watch on Monday or Tuesday - was it the same way?

reply

Watching now, it's cropped. It's just cool to see these great shows again so I'll deal with it.

So, the first three episodes were cropped. Episode four ("Moving Violation") was aired normally. And then today's episode (#5 "Career Day") was cropped again.

I noticed the credits running right into the sides of the picture, but I hadn't noticed any top or bottom issues. Can I assume you changed the aspect ratio ("zoom") on your TV? I have to change mine when watching METv (or any other non-HDTV channel). There might also be an output setting on your cable box to check.

Or maybe METv has cropped the top and bottom and I haven't noticed.

The episodes are horrible cropped on MeTV. Here's my thought, because I've seen it happen before (I work in video/TV) I believe that CHiPs (like many other older shows shot on film (ie Dukes Of Hazzard - now on CMT in HD)has been converted to 16x9 HD. In that process, there has to be top and bottom cropping with a little zoom to make a 16x9 frame from a 4x3 original. Then what happens is a new 4x3 transfer is made (or possibly MeTV crops the 16x9) to 4x3. Effectively what has happened is that you've now lost image (cropped) on all four sides, making a crappy looking cropped image. If we were seeing the true 16x9 version, the zoom and crop wouldn't be bad at all (again...see Dukes Of Hazzard on CMT in HD).

Hi All-

You might want to try adjusting your TV display ratio on your TV settings- my Samsung has a Standard and Widescreen setting- it has to be on Standard for ME TV!

Then I switch to Widescreen when I go back to Golf Channel! Lol

Hope this helps!

A week ago I was watching an episode on MeTV and something odd happened. For a brief instant it went from cropped to letterboxed. I was able to freeze frame on my PVR and I was amazed on how much more could be seen in the letterbox presentation.

So you guys who say you can adjust the picture size, it doesn't matter. You're still missing quite a bit of footage.

It looks fine on my TV too. But it would look a whole lot better if it wasn't cropped.

Hi, I'm watching CHiPs on the KVOS MeTV.

I saw this. It happened approximately 8 minutes and 40 seconds into the episode of Bio-Rhythms. The scene was in an office and the picture zoomed out and returned zoomed in three times in just two seconds. Playing it back slowly I can see areas on both sides that I could see before. And areas at the top and bottom. When zoomed out I can see a fire engine on the left and more licence plates on the wall and papers on a board at right.

I would prefer to see the entire picture zoomed out. However I am very glad that they're playing CHiPs again so I guess I shouldn't complain too much.

Perhaps some person(s) at KVOS or MeTV noticed it may be zoomed in and they checked it out to see how it looked zoomed out and that's what we saw.

Here's something interesting: ordinarily the logo at the bottom right corner has "MeTV" with "KVOS" stuck beneath it. But when it zoomed out, the "MeTV" portion of the logo separated from the "KVOS" portion of the logo and moved with the picture that got zoomed out. Meanwhile, the KVOS portion of the logo stayed put at the corner. This indicates that their logo is actually two separate logos in one.

Much more annoyingly, why are they only showing the first two seasons?? I get that those are the only ones on DVD, so far. They must be on the THIRD go around on the 2nd season already. Is it too expensive to buy the rest? Major disappointment.

Doesn't MeTV show every season of all their shows?

ME is showing season 5 at the moment so WTF are you talking about?

I'm not sure about the cropping, but they blurred the girls nipples as they got out of the water!

I noticed that too. Perhaps her top was a little too see-through or her nipples were too pokie.

I noticed that. Haven't watched the DVD in a while, but I don't recall seeing that on the DVD.
