What do the CHPS actually do?

Does anybody know? Television tends to take liberties with characters occupations, and I'm sure they've done it on this show, as well. I assume, their jurisdiction is strictly the highway?

With most state police they patrol the highways and act as police in unincorporated areas or
communities that are too small or don't have full time police department.

They traffic cops on motorcycles patrolling the freeways.
