An often asked question.

Isn't the hair length of the officers a bit long, should they have the regulated hair cut? I'm talking specifically about Larry Wilcox's character, 'Jon Baker'. Ponch's hair cut isn't too bad, just a little longer than it should be on the sides. This isn't the only show of this period regarding professional men, that I've questioned the hair length of, "Emergency" is another.

reply

i usually do not watch emergency but i caught the end of one the other day and a fire chief told him to get a "hair cut".

I remember seeing San Fran. PD patrolman in the 1970s...with fairly long hair...Watch Karl Malden in " the Freaks of San Francisco" and you'll see what I mean...

In the episode Vigilante, which aired recently, Getraer told Baricza to get a haircut, adding "You're a CHP officer, not a rock star!"

I should also note that Jack Webb constantly got on Randy Mantooth's case about the length of his hair.

reply

Johnny on Emergency! had really long hair in season 5. Randolph Mantooth made a comment about his long hair and said something like "get ready for the long haired fireman."
