I grew up as a kid in the 70's watching CHIP's and I loved it but I don't think I ever watched season 6 during its original airing...I was 9 when the series premiered and by season 6 I was 14 so my attention was drawn to other interests...so now I am starting to watch it as it airs on MeTV and I'm sorry but it's just bad...as I re-watch the series now it was obvious that the show was losing it somewhere along season 5...but by season 6...the heart of the show was gone...I'll continue to watch just to see if there are any highlights but I am skeptical...overall though...the show brings back a lot of nostalgia for me...when I watch it I get a 70's feel...if that makes sense...I am not sure though if it would appeal to younger viewers today...since the nostalgia would not be there for them...just my thoughts...
I agree with you on Season 5.I think for all that Season 6 was,it was better than Season 5.Season 5 was just all over the place and I know it's because of the Erik Estrada hold out for more money and they had to do re-writes but it was just like you said boring. Some of episodes from Season 5 that were okay were Tiger In The Streets,K-9-1,Overload,and my favorite was A Threat Of War.
I've been watching the run on ME TV and I feel as you do. I was in my late teens when it started and I do remember all the hoopla over Estrada getting hurt during filming in '79. Not only do I get a nostalgic feeling as you do but so much of the show was filmed in the San Fernando Valley where I lived. So I'm always seeing old burger joints and supermarkets that I'm familiar with. LOL. I never came across any on-location filming, though. Looking forward to the Laura Branigan episode.
I'm really enjoying the sixth season. I think it's a lot of fun. If the show had started with the two brothers, instead of Jon, I think it would have been just as big a hit, if not bigger.
I agree i happen to like it i was a huge fan of chips when i was a kid being 29 now i rediscovered the show when the 1st season dvd came out can't wait to get season 3 so am very happy metv started to show this again on tv cause i always wanted to see season 4-6 i happen to miss season 4-5 only seeing a few episodes i hope to see it when they reshow them but getting back to season 6 yes i do miss jon but i don't really hate season 6 so far i happen to like the episodes
Yes, some season 6 episodes work better than others. I particularly liked the one where Ponch's girlfriend visits and they are held hostage at his apartment. That story was a lot more realistic than some of the other ones.
The robot one, which has been discussed in a separate thread, is definitely corny but I think the writers were trying to explore issues of how law enforcement was changing due to advances in technology and automation.
Another one, about an anti-nuke rally had some contrivances-- but those kinds of things were in the news back then. I was a young kid in the early-to-mid 1980s, and the threat of nuclear war was all around us, before the Berlin Wall came down and Soviet-U.S. relations began to thaw. So when I watch some of these episodes, even the cheesier ones, I see things we were dealing with back then, and in a way, it's a window into American history.
Probably what I really like about season 6, though, is that we have a lead latin character (played by Estrada). In the earlier seasons, Ponch and Jon were fairly equal. But at this point in the show, Ponch is definitely the lead and I think it allows them to go in new directions, because he's Bobby and Bruce's mentor. I wish there had been a seventh season, because I think we would have seen Ponch (and Erik) grow more in that role.

While it appeared realistic, it contained a huge plot hole. Cops are trained about weapon retention. In the first fight, Poncherello has knocked the bad guy in the opposite direction of BOTH guns- the bad guy's gun and Poncherello's gun. Instead of picking both up and covering the bad guy, Poncherello moves away from them and continues the fight, allowing bad guy #2 to take him out. Someone in charge of this show had a bias against cops holding guns. Others have noted it only took place like twice over the course of the series. Note that when Getraer and the Nelsons make the rescue at Poncherello's apartment, none has a gun in hand.
Even in S6 they have showed some accurate law enforcement scenes, such as Nelson walking with a passenger to get something from a vehicle, and Poncherello accurately stating they could not make an illegal search.
Those have been the very rare exceptions.

I continue to like the episode that took place mostly at Ponch's apartment. I can see where someone expecting more accuracy regarding police procedures might take issue with some of it. Still, there was some well-played suspense. The scene with the cheese knife was a good touch. Having the cleaning lady come back and get mixed up in the drama was also good. I thought she would help distract the bad guys so Ponch could take 'em down, but it didn't quite play out that way. I guess Bobby and Getraer had to be the heroes.
In terms of technical issues and accuracy, I had more of an issue with the subplot where the female officer so willingly accepted the flowers from a secret admirer. I think most cops, especially female ones who do not have boyfriends or spouses, would be more apprehensive and cautious. Especially as more gifts arrive at work. The scene with the ape interrupting the officers' meeting and kissing the female cop was completely ridiculous. It was funny, but no way would a female office let a stranger bearing gifts kiss her. We found out later the man behind it was a harmless elderly fellow (played by Phil Silvers) but even then, why would she be so willing to meet up with him for a meal or coffee? He could still turn out to be a stalker.
Another note on that episode you just mentioned.Did you notice who the one of those actors was that was holding them hostage? It was none other than a very young David Caruso.Another really good episode from season 6 is Fast Company. That's the one where Ponch and Jon are stuck in the town run by the dirty sherrif played by one of the best bad guy actors of all time William Smith.

Um, Jon was not in Season 6. It was the uber-rookie Bruce Nelson, who had been immediately assigned to motorcycle duty right out of the academy.

Season 6 was always my favorite and I hope they bring it out on DVD. My copy from tapes is practically worn out. I can't watch half the epiosodes any longer.
I always had a crush on Bobby. He was adorable. I loved the episode where Ponch is being held hostage and Bobby is interrogating that kid. Mmmmm.
I gotta say I was surprised by the Bonaduce appearance in the latest episode(High Times). Not sure why the hell he was even in the story, but is was funny that he won Grease Hop king.
One odd thing about that episode, when Ponch and Bobby walk into the arcade(which is still there in Sherman Oaks) http://www.laparks.org/shermanoaks_castlepk/ all of the games have their names covered. Never seen that before. I know sometimes tv shows will disguise brands of food, drink in certain scenes, but I've never seen anything like that.
I got the impression that the dance was in the middle of the school day! I didn't think academics were all that important at that school, truth be told. But I enjoyed the episode for what it was and it made good use of Bruce's youthful looks--21 Jump Street before its time.
I think I've already deleted the episode but as I recall the events prior to the dance were at night- Tiki Club, etc. I've never seen a school hold a dance during the day.
EDIT I restored it and it was somewhat unclear. The gambler kid was picked up at night by Poncherello & Nelson, then we saw the coach and two kids pulling an engine from a stolen car. After the ads, the school was shown during the day with the kids skating in the halls apparently going to the "Grease Hop". The coach mentions the gambler kid got picked up "last night", yet in the following scene the kid is being interrogated by Poncherello, Nelson, and Getraer. Either the dance was at night, or Poncherello and Nelson worked around the clock. Since juvenile suspects can't be detained that amount of time w/o a parent being contacted, it gave the appearance of all being the same night. I saw a sign earlier in the episode that said the "Grease Hop" was on Tuesday and "Grease Day" was Tuesday, but there was no time listed for the dance. Seems odd the school would have a dance during a school day.

Reason why the game names were covered was probably due to not having permission to use the copyrighted/trademarked names and due to the cost of buying those rights.
The show was never great or accurate but the last year in particular was RIDICULOUS....whoever was writing this drivel should have been banned from Hollywood. The only reason I watch this show now is to see all the beautiful old cars they wreck and the locations.
During the last season, they had back-to-back episodes with Sweathogs...a week after Robert Hegyes (Epstein) guest-starred, we get an episode with Ron 'Horshack' Palillo!
Surprised that they couldn't get Washington or Beau De La Barre to make an appearance! Of course, they weren't gonna get Barbarino to appear...
This week, I watched all the episodes but Rock, Devil, Rock, which I caught when it was on YouTube, albeit briefly...anyhow, it was my first time seeing these episodes. I just have to say that the Spaceman episode...I don't know what possible adjective I could use to describe it. I'm going to write a review shortly. And Speedway Fever...those Valley chicks, like totally, GAG ME!!
