Really loved this film!

Just saw it this afternoon on Bravo. Great performances all around. Insanely top notch cast. And the final sword fight was superbly acted. Shaw was obviously under appreciated as a leading man and action hero. It's obvious the movie was never intended to be high art, just a ripping tale, and it delivers.

I have loved this film since I saw it at the theatre when it first came
out. Since then I have purchased the video and watched it at least once
a year for about the last five years. Now I am hoping to get it thru
Amazon on DVD. The music is great, the color is superb, the action is
just plain fun. I think the movie was intended to be a bit campy...tongue
in cheek, at least that is the way I have viewed it. Just a feel good
movie. Check out James Earl Jones...WOW...and I loved Robert Shaw in
this (unfortunately he died only 2 years after this was made).
By the way...if you liked this one try "Nate & Hayes", it is of similar
style...pirates etc. It stars Tommy Lee Jones in his younger more
athletic days.

I first saw this movie when it came on HBO in the early 80's and I was hooked. I taped it and watched it over and over. I now have it on DVD and still watch it over and over....I LOVE IT!!!

Many wonderful and campy moments. A movie obviously done in good fun and yet superbly crafted.

My favorite part was the figurehead on the ship. A cock with breasts. too funny.

Sailing is Life, Everything Else is Just Details.

I love this film so much, me and my mum would sit down and watch it together on wet afternoons!

One question though, does anyone know where I can find a copy on DVD or video it must be region 2 - PAL format - suitable for use in the UK.

Any help would be appreciated.

Moms are great.

I agree Robert Shaw did a wonderful job, as Irish swordman...He was oozing with senuality when he fought the fair damsel.

I finally saw this movie on the weekend, Robert Shaw is one of my favourite actors, since I saw Jaws in 1982.

Does anyone know how Swashbuckler did at the box office? Was it well received?

Leonard Maltin gave it a BOMB! It's nothing brilliant but it's a lot better than a bomb.

As I remember, the whole Peter Boyle bathtub scenario kind of freaked people out. Weren't ready for it in '76 in a film like this.

One more vote for underrated. I liked everyone in this movie. I liked the way it was filmed. I liked the music.

Man, you should have seen it on the big screen.

This film is a total guilty pleasure for me. My husband and I love it! I know what the critics think about it and I don't care; I always make my own mind up about movies, books and music, anyway.
The actors in this film look as if they are having a wonderful time - it seems even that the director waved his hands, sat back and told James Earl Jones, Robert Shaw, Genevieve Bujold, Peter Boyle (who is especially WAY over the top) and Beau Bridges, "Have at it."
It is so much fun to watch!
