Thank you i had to do some serious research to find this song. The gladys knight one just doesnt do Mckee justice. But good looking.

Donny Hathaway sings the original, classic version. Jennifer Holliday also does a good version.

I haven't heard Gladys Knight do it, but it needs a performer who can do some serious blues tunes.

She's far too sultry to go straight up, back room, broke down blues.

Donny's version is my favorite, very haunting. They played Donny's version on "Girlfriends" in the bar
scene where Maya was "Giving Up" on Darnell when he was getting more serious with the "Heifer".

Also, Michael Buble just recorded "A Song for You" by Donny./givingup248218.html

Too bad they never released the Movie version of the songs. I liked Aretha, but the Sisters version of "Hooked on your love" was better. So was "Givin' him Something He can Feel"

Hey edward-thanks for that link....

Actually, Gladys Knight & the Pips recorded their version of "Giving Up" in 1964, about a decade before Donny Hathaway did. Their version is more rhythmic than Hathaway's later cover. I have no idea if the song (written by Van McCoy) is a Knight original, but theirs is the earliest version I know of.

Check out anything you can find on Donny Hathaway as he recorded it in the early '70's.
