Joel Schumacher ???????
I find it rather interesting that Joel Schumacher wrote this story about blacks living in the ghetto. Is there something I don't know about him?

Well,
He directed BATMAN FOREVER, BATMAN AND ROBIN and a few well known films he directed to his crdit. I'm like you, this man wrote the script to an all-black movie? I'm suprised myself?
"SG"
Of course the actors fleshed out the script fully but his detail & feeling conveyed in the story about African-American artists moving forward is commendable. I'm curious about his research & familiarity with the subjects.
shareOh Snaps, didn't know that. I am surprised. That's up there with when I found out author James Patterson was a white dude. He writes all those books about Det. Alex Cross and his friends and family who are black. I just knew Patterson was black!

Don't forget that there was another writer on the project, Howard Rosenman, who was one of those Jewish guys who grew up in New York and took the subway to see the shows in the ghetto ever since he was old enough to figure out how to sneak out of his parents house. He had and still has a love for that music.

I thought Schmacher's trite and uninspired script was the sole weak aspect of an otherwise very good movie; it's basically a tired catalogue of tried'n'true showbiz cliches.
"Warren Oates died for our sins"
Jews have an affinity for blacks, although the reverse is not always true. Forgive Schumacher his homoerotic BATMAN flicks and FLATLINERS. He made FALLING DOWN.
shareIn the 80s Warner Brothers bought the rights to make the film version of "Dreamgirls." The studio wanted Joel Schumacher to direct it. "Sparkle" is obviously the reason why.
shareThank GOD Schumacher didn't get his hands on DREAMGIRLS! Just take a look at the mess he made of PHANTOM OF THE OPERA!
shareIm sorry but I must disagree! Schumacher's direction was the only saving grace of Phantom Of The Opera (besides the lovely Emmy Rossum), the play itself is just not good. But thats my opinion.
