A lot of Jewish people have that name. it is very common. It is like a nickname. Like Joseph and Joey. I live on Long Island and I know at least 5 men named Hymie. That is why the name is used as a stereotype word to indicate a place where a lot of Jewish people live or a jewish person.
Hymie comes from the Jewish name Hyman,(Chaim), and the German name Herman. Hyman is shortened to Hymie.
There was a very famous gangster named Hymie Weiss.
A little tidbit. I know some Latinos whose names are Jaimie but is pronounced Hymie.
hmmm....informative. thanks.
shareThanks. It is like the name Tom. People use it as a derougatory name for black men who act subserviant. But the name Tom is a real name also, that plenty of black men have. It is weird how perfectly respectful names are used for for something bad. Hooker is another perfectly good last name that was used that way. Years ago black men were called George no one ever bothered to ask their real names but because they worked as Pullman Porters and the man who started Pullman name was George they were all called George.
