Remake

I'm pretty sure they're making a remake, if anyone cares. I read in an interview of Raven-Symone's in Teen People and it said it was one of her upcoming movies about a trio of sisters who sing.

reply

Do you know if she is playing sparkle? would it be the actual remake or just another movie like it. Also, does anyone know where i can get the performances on audio?

reply

The music from the movie "Sparkle" came from the Aretha Franklin album entitled, "Sparkle". EnVogue also remade a couple of the songs (Hooked on Your Love & Something He Can Feel).

reply

In actuality, Aretha Franklin was pulled in to sing the songs, in order for Curtis Mayfield to market the songs, since it was determined that the original singers weren't "marketable". Even though it would have been nice to have the original singers for the soundtrack, I am glad that Aretha was the one to pull it off, and that she did!

reply

I agree, I wish there was a soundtrack available with the original singers from the movie as the arrangements are completely different with Aretha singing them as solos as opposed to three-part harmony. Actually, Irene Cara, who played Sparkle was nominated for an Oscar for her singing in "Fame" and she won the Oscar for her singing the theme song to "Flashdance". So she could have been "marketable".

reply

I'm pretty sure it's going to be a remake of it. Michael Elliot [screenwriter of Brown Sugar (2002)] is working on revising the script. So it won't be what you're use to seeing Raven doing (acting wise).

reply

Speaking of a remake, I have an idea of who else can play in it along with Raven Simone, I think Beyonce Knowles could play in it too but I don't know who could play the third sister but I wonder if Alicia Keys ever taken up acting because she might could be in it also which would make all three sisters.

reply

there really was suppose to be a remake of Sparkle, the late Aaliyah was originally suppose to play sparkle and it was suppose to be produced by whitney houston, but because of Aaliyah's untimely death production was stopped

reply

Do you really think you'll get Alicia Keys and Beyonce on the big screen together without an act of God? Someone would have to take a back seat? Who would you pick?

reply

I like Raven, however I dont feel she is right for this movie. I'm not sure vocally she could handle it. Not to say that the three original actors were vocal legends, but imo if you're going to remake it, you're going to have to one-up the original. Bring in some singer/actors who are gonna make the viewing audience say dayyyyyyyumn.

reply

I absolutely agree with you on that 1....Raven is talented but she shouldn't play sparkle. In my opinion, Raven gotta have a little more soul in her than she has 2 play Sparkle. I mean, look at the names that are being thrown in that people think should play the part. Beyonce, Ashanti, and the late, great Aaliyah names were thrown out there 4 that part, now think, does Raven fit in that catagory?

reply

I think Ashanti should play the role of sparkle because although she may or may not be scandalous, she can look the part of an innocent younger sister. Beyonce should be Sister. She would definately play a good vixen and it would be fun to see her play a drug addict. Alicia Keys should play Delores. Delores seemed to be a very strong yet tom-boy type of character and I think Alicia can play that off. Raven should play that heavy-set friend that tried to take Delores' place when she bounced out of town.

I strongely agree that Beyonce should play Sister, Ashanti play Sparkle and Alisha Keys should be Delores. Also, Raveen Symone would be too heavy to play Sparkle anyway because all three sisters were slim. I don't know who could play Stix but whoever is chosen has to be very attractive and can sing too. I do have an idea who could play Satin who was the bad guy in the movie, rappers DMX or Snoop Dogg could play him, that's who I can think of. What time of era do you think the movie should be set in? I know, even though Sparkle was made in the 1970s, it was set in either the late 1950s or the early 1960s. I was wondering if the remake should be set in this era of time or as I was thinking in the mid 1970s or early 1980s and also the style of music would be like old school singing group The Emotions. Does anyone know who could play the mother? Maybe Angela Bassett or somebody and Jennifer Lewis as Effie, her neighbor friend.

reply

I heard they were gonna make a remake starring Ashanti as Sparkle. That was 2 years ago. I think that's a pretty good cast. Here's my cast.

Sparkle-Ashanti
Sister-Mariah Carey (just find the woman a good acting coach, please!)
Delores- Fantasia
Stix- Usher
Satin- DMX would be perfect
Levi-Meki Phifer
The Mother-Angela Basset is a great cast

Your cast is good too, with Mariah Carey as another choice for Sister and Fantasia as another for Delores. Usher would be perfect as Stix and Mekhi Phifer as Levi, this would be a good remake and I hope it happens too.

am i the only one that thinks having ONLY FAMOUS singers acting the part of FAMOUS SINGERS is a lil too much? i think there should be actresses who dont do singing for a livin in it as well. Beyonce would be good, but she's already doin a movie about a trio singin group in the 60s, so another one... just set in 50s? too much.

reply

Beyonce as Sister to me is a no brainer. I think Stix should be Terrence Howard. I don't know who could play Irene Cara's part. I say bring in a new comer. The third sister - also a new comer. I think well known talent in every role is over kill. Give some up and comers an opportunity.

Some of the people I thought were:

Stix-Tahj Mowry
Sister-Beyonce
Levi-Elijah Kelley
The Mother-Angela Basset

I don't know about the others yet.

In my opinion Beyonce & Ashanti names shouldnt be mentioned along with Alicia Keyes. There is a difference between a pop performer and a soulful performer. Beyone & Ashanti are pop artists, Alicia is a soul artist, just contrast the singing style and the type of songs they released. Beyone is not a good enough actress to play in sparkle.

reply

I think that Beyonce would sink her teeth in a role like Sister from "Sparkle". I believe that she would do whatever it takes to channel Lonette McKee like Jennifer Hudson was able to do with Jennifer Holliday's character in "Dreamgirls".

While I agree that Alicia Keys is "hella" talented and knows her craft well but Ashante and Beyonce have also cut their teeth writing and producing their own songs. I have heard all three sing live in person and I was blown away by Beyonce's voice, choreography, and stage presence--she's a hard worker and she has her sights set on longevity and I don't think she will be denied. While Ashante's voice is the weakest of the three, there is denying that she makes bankable mid-tempo pop songs that are catchy and easy to dance to. Alicia Keys is the only one with formal music training and the ability to play an instrument and her mom was an opera singer so it's in the genes.

Raven is a pretty good singer.
Plus she has a lot of fans who go to see her in this film.
I have seen her do serious roles so she can handle the dramatic part.
And doing comedy is so much harder to do.
I don't know if Beyonce would want to do another movie musical.
Between her and Alicia Keys which one would play Sister.
Of the two I find Miss keys has the more powerful voice.
Sister has to knock you with her singing from the get go.

I'd also like to add that Rene Zelweger and Reese Witherspoon got Oscars for singing parts and neither are trained singers. I don't believe Lonette McGee's background was singing either. Maybe someone like Nia Long or Sanaa Latham could pull off this role.

Read her bio... Need I say more... Good you said I don't believe!

reply

She started out singing and how can Sparkle be based of dreamgirls, when it was made in 1976 and dreamgirls was made in 1981.

reply

Dreamgirls is based off of the story of the rise and fall of Diana Ross and the Supremes. Sparkle sounds somethin like it, but not as close as Dreamgirls.

reply

Sparkle was released in 1976. Dreamgirls wasn't created til the beginning of the '80s.

reply

Well I don't think that Beyonce or Ashanti can act...not one lick!!

If you're looking for sisters, Joy Bryant, Robinne Lee and Zoe Saldana would be perfect for the parts, they'd just have to lip sing, but that's what actors do.

reply

I don't know people-I'm reading through these responses thinking ok I lover her, but...I know in Hollywood you can be 40 and play 20, but it seems like many of the names thrown out are a bit too seasoned. These are all high school girls-the characters in sparkle...

reply

Beyonce should not be anything. Her acting SUX BIGTIME. Someone mentioned that she should play "Sister". NO WAY. This role needs to be played by someone who can really ACT.

reply

If they are going to do a remake of this classic 70s flick, PUH-LEASE do not put Beyonce in it. I don't see her fitting in at all. Alicia Keyes would definitely be my choice to play Sister. Raven Symone could play Sparkle however given the subject matter, I don't think she would take on the role. It would have to be updated and cleaned up and when that happens, the intensity of the film and the character can disappear. Plus, with her being on the Disney circuit, this would not be a venue for her. I would have to think some more before giving up my choices to play Sparkle and Delores. Write more later.

YOU MADE ME PLAY SECOND BASE!
