Whitney Houston, making her first return to movies since 1996’s The Preacher’s Wife, is in negotiations to star in Sparkle, Sony Pictures remake of the 1976 music-themed drama. American Idol winner Jordin Sparks and actor Mike Epps also are set to star.
I just hope they don't mess up a true Masterpiece,I love this movie and watch it all of the time. That Taylor girl from that Madea movie can sing and act, she'd make a perfect Delores.I even bought my mom a copy and sent it to her.
You think the original Sparkle is a masterpiece? LOL It's a weak film with horrible editing, horrible lighting and a thin plot. This is actually the perfect candidate for a remake because they can definitely improve on it! This is not remaking the Godfather or Sound of Music. Sparkle was a cute little movie and had a following in the black community, but was far from being a great film.
While Sparkle (1976) was not a technical masterpiece by any stretch, the heart and soul was there. What was the masterpiece was the infusion of the music (songs) with the plot and the characters. You say it was only big in the black community but that doesn't mean it wasn't a good movie. It was made for blacks and it was about blacks. It connections to many of us especially to people who were around during that time when there were barely any blacks in film. This was a new era for everyone involved from the actors to the audience. What this film lacks in polish it makes up for it in heart. Can that be replicated? We'll see.
Her role will be as someone who was in the music business before but didn't really like the environement. She now sings in church and has very high standards for her daughters. And she doesn't like her daughers in that entertainment environement and all the bad influences in it, nor seeing her daughters singing sexual type of songs that is a not good message for young girls. She's basically not supportive of Sparkle going after a music "pop" career. That's the role of Effie in the remake.
If mike Epps plays anyone it should be Levi...I think the guy who played Effie's brother in Dream Girls would make a great Stix plus he can actually sing. I heard they got Derek Luke to play Satin which I think is spot on. Some people were suggesting Terrance Howard for Stix but jut like Mike he's too old and it would awkward to me him kissing Jordin lol
