Was King richard corrupt in this one?

I don't rember too much of the movie sides I like and respect
Sean Connery as an actor, but if I rember King Richard was corrupt or becoming corrupt in this because Robin was questioning his allegiance to Richard am I rmbering it differently?

reply

King Richard isn´t just corrupt in this movie. He is a reckless lunatic, who kills everyone to reach his selfish goals. Thats why Robin and Little John start to question their allegiance to Richard and finally go back to Sherwood Forest after his death without visiting his funeral.

Thank You I liked Sean connery also so was not sure if i was rembering the same movie

Churchill had a very dim of view of Richard the Lionheart. He was all razzle dazzle with no meaningful accomplishment. Old Bulldog contrasted him to his own favorite English hero Simon d'Montfort who won many battles for England but died tragically championing the cause of parliamentarism. Richard drove England's economy to the ground and caused the loss of the lives of many of his subjects due to his reckless adventures. According to some historians, he slept with men.

I hated Sean Connery's cameo as a heroic Richard I in Robin Hood Prince of Thieves because he's previously starred in one of the few versions of Robin Hood where Richard I was portrayed as a villain.

Right and then in "Men in Thights" Patrick Stuart does the same thing, too bad they couldn't get Roger Moore to replace Sean one more time.

I love the way this film portrays Richard "Cœur de Lion", in that he does seem to be a rather "bad" man, even for the standards of the time (compare him to Saladin for instance... not that he would be completely good by today's standards) and of course was part of a French conqueror class who had no right to rule England and treat the English as slaves (called "serfs" or "villeins").

"Nothings gonna change my world!"

What does does it matter if he slept with men?

reply

This is an accurate portrayal of Richard except that, set twenty years after robin defended his throne in england, richard only reigned for 10 years, but this was necessary for the sake of the story.

I was just watching the movie and although I dont know if its because they have the same writer or if was deliberate on Richard Harris' part, but I get the feeling that Harris is channelling Peter O'Tooles performance in Lion in Winter.

Anthony Hopkins played Richard in 'Lion in Winter'; however, his performance reminded me of O'Toole's Henry II in that movie.

"What do you want me to do, draw a picture? Spell it out!"

reply

Sorry, if it was confusing, thats what I meant...that he was playing Richard as an older man to resemble his father, Henry, the charecter O'toole had played
