Should be rated higher

I think this is one of the best movies of the 70s and beautifully filmed. I like the fact it adds a bit of realism to the robin hood myth, its a very nice departure from the usual swashbuckling antics that you might expect. The performances are first rate especially robert shaw, this is truly an overlooked gem from the 70s.

Absolutely. We didn't see this kind of subdued, bittersweet Robin Hood movie prior to the seventies, and we're not going to see it these days, either.

I agree. I think most of the negative comments about this film come from people who were expecting it to be like any other Robin Hood film(ie. swashbuckling action and heavy doses of comic relief), and were disappointed when it wasn't. I thought it was wonderful as a bittersweet touching love story.

Absolutely. There was a mini-renaissance of historical films in the mid-70's that were excellent, three of which had Sean Connery in them; The Man Who Would Be King, The Wind and the Lion, and Robin and Marian. After that well-made historical films didn't really come back into their own until the last decade with Braveheart, Last of the Mohicans, etc. Since then they are still being made, but alas the quality level has declined. I always hope for it to lift up again. I did like the Russell Crowe Robin Hood as the story was well thought out, but the characters weren't nearly as vibrant as they were in Robin and Marian, or have the chemistry between actors. So to this day, Robin and Marian remains, I believe, the finest Robin Hood film of all. In spite of what some critics have to say about it. ;-)

I was watching the wide screen one from TCM, made me think how sad Robert died so young it would have been nice if he and Sean made one more film where Shaw was the hero and Sean the baddie

7.2-73 is fine with me. The performances make it, the plot is a little wobbly.

Agreed---I couldn't believe the 6.6 rating.

Another example of why the 70's were the best decade for films. What a great cast!

I bet the low rating is likely due to younger people not having the patience to watch this film
