It's hard to believe they were mid 40's when they filmed this


They seemed to me to be somewhat older than that when I look at them, Connery in particular. Regardless, still a wonderful film, both fun and melancholy. The betrayal of aging - the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak - the tradgedy of past glories and past loves that will never come again. Even the villainous Sheriff, played by the inimitable Robert Shaw, seemed to mellow with age and learn something of compassion and grace. Such a sad and beautiful ending, it made me weep for John. While I know what Marion did, she did for love, but it still seemed too selfish. Was she entitled to that after 20 years? Well, I guess Robin seemed to think so. So be it.

What added an ongoing sense of melancholy throughout this movie for me was realizing how many of these actors have since passed away. I guess you could say that for any film, but for some reason I just had a more acute sense of that here, what with the whole aging theme and all.

Yes they look more like mid-50s to me, albeit in good shape.
