Worst...movie...ever

I can't believe that I wasted my time watching this movie. With such an incredible cast, this movie should have been awesome and legendary. Instead, we have a depressing ending with Marian killing off Robin Hood. WTF?!!!

I can't believe that the producers thought this would be a good ending. If I had been in the theater watching this piece of cinematic garbage, I would have demanded my money back.

Horrible...just plain horrible.

The ending was perfect, and inevitable. The entire story was about the burgeoning sense of loss and regret over missed opportunities and love deferred; how could y'all not SEE that this is how it had to play itself out? A wonderful antidote to other stories with rousing, phoney finales that seem ordained for creating sequels. I was thrilled this ended the way it did.

The prospect of old age in the twelfth century didn't offer Florida condos or Medicare, so the idea of being delivered from one's remaining less-than-golden years by the love of one's life seems to not be a particularly bad prospect to me. If I make it to 72 or so I'm planning a hunting accident myself. For those who prefer tubes and prolonging the inevitable I say good luck with that.

Brownish and MasterJedi (and doesn't that name speak volumes about his taste in film?) need to look up the word 'elegy'.

Now THAT was a very well-deserved response to the OP's ridiculous critique.
Superlative! 

Until you actually love someone as much as she always loved him - you WON'T get it. So just drop it, because you're embarrassing yourself. This is the greatest Robin Hood film ever made. It feels more real than any of the others. I personally love those films that anger many viewers and truly reveal what type of soul they actually are. ROBIN AND MARIAN is definitely an Old Soul film, that's for sure.

Baby Souls will always hate selfless decisions because they cannot fathom anything but their petty ego. It's all about them, and how they want life to be.

This film revealed the most perfect way to end a contemplative classic about two legendary characters. Life isn't always happily ever after.

Kubrick's film - will always be the definitive version of The Shining.

Beautifully said. Perhaps the OP hasn't experienced the sort of deep, all-encompassing love that Robin & Marian had; if he's fortunate, maybe he will one day. Then he'll be able to understand the beauty & passion & depth of this film's ending.

The ending is right out of the Robin Hood stories. This movie is an underrated classic. Probably the best Robin Hood film ever made. If people don't "get" the meloncholy approach that's not the fault of the movie. It tempers it out with a lot of humor and strong characters. You'd think in this era of everyone prefering "dark, depressing" endings this movie would go over far better than it did in 1976, the era of warm fuzzy bunny movies.

<<This movie is an underrated classic. >>

Exactly right. Some people want to see the same thing over and over with different actors and bigger sets. This is as brilliantly understated character piece about an aging man facing his own legacy in light of his shortcomings. At the time it struck me as an exploration of "What if Robin Hood really existed in the real world," a kind of myth deconstruction with the benefit of having the actual characters display the charisma and charm that made them famous.

I love the film and understand the reason for the ending.
One review give the ending away when Sean said how unlike Bond he wouldn't have to play the role again since Robin dies.
I kept the ending from my wife and brother when we when to see it

Sorry folks this ending IS close to how the old tales of Robin Hood say how he died, though exactly which woman poisoned him varies between versions.
The romantic, `Marion and Robin marry when Richard returns` ending was is more or less an invention of the Victorians.

I liked the movie and the ending.

And all this talk about getting money back is just silly. Thinking that you can ever get your money back just because you don't like the movie is simply stupid. Why on Earth would any theatre ever give you your money back just because you're a whining cry-baby?

reply

Movie theaters will often give you your money back if you request it due to disruption, uncomfortable seating, bad food, awful movie. They budget in a certain number of people requesting refunds, and often don't fight you if you request it. At the very least they'll often give you a free ticket for the next time you're there, knowing it's better to have a customer who is satisfied with the service they received than one who walks away feeling cheated. A satisfied customer is likely to return to the theater sooner and buy more soft drinks, candy and popcorn.
