A Very Pertinent Question:

The Pink Panther diamond appears only in three of Inspector Closeau's movies; why, then, do movies such as this one have PINK PANTHER as part of the title? Does it refer to Closeau himself as a kind of superhero alias?

reply

I think it is like the Thin Man series where the missing thing/person is the same as the title but the other characters become so associated with the title that they just stick with it.

I think the Pink Panther cartoon in the start and end credits was very popular and so after A Shot in the Dark they decide to name all the subsequent films after the Panther because the cartoons are more fun with him then with Clouseau by himself.

I know as a kid it was very confusing because the first movie I saw was the last one, Revenge, and I only knew the Pink Panther from the cartoon and I couldn't figure out who the Pink Panther was supposed to be in the movie.

And recently I watched A Shot in the Dark and the begin credit cartoon wasn't as entertaining as the ones with the Pink Panther. So, if the Pink Panther is the money shot, they're going to use the Pink Panther even if it isn't in the story anymore.

The Thin Man is a tad more confusing to me but maybe they just felt they had a winning formula and stuck with it.

In the original Thin Man movie, the title is a description of the murderer in the plot. Later, it came to refer to any movie featuring the Nick and Nora Charles characters of the 1st film, quite like what you said about the Pink Panther titles.Hope that makes it less confusing. P.S. I agree about the cartoons. Good observations.

Wow, how incredibly unobservant I must be. I always assumed, because there were a number of films, that "The Thin Man" referred to Nick. Who, I did observe, wasn't really all that thin.

I asked the doctor to take your picture so I can look at you from inside as well.

I found this in the trivia section - it should answer your question.

The title of this film is misleading, as the "Pink Panther" - the large diamond featured in the first Clouseau Pink Panther movies, The Pink Panther (1963) and The Return of the Pink Panther (1975) - is not featured (or even mentioned) in this film. By the 1970s, the name "Pink Panther" had become so synonymous with Inspector Clouseau - and the animated panther featured in the opening credits - that all future Clouseau films would include "Pink Panther" in the title.
