Omar Sharif

I love how Omar Sharif just sort of appears out of nowhere in the movie, bumps off the bank robber that Dreyfus had hired (having mistaken him for Clouseau), makes love to Olga, then leaves. No lines, no nothing. He's not even listed in the closing credits! It's literally a walk on role. You could hardly imagine a big star doing that in a movie today!

Oh, I'm sure he got paid very well for the role. But a lot of big name actors these days wouldn't play such a small role. And the best part about it is, he's not even credited in the film. If you didn't know who Omar Sharif was before seeing the film, you'd never know it was a big film star playing that role!

I recently saw the film for the first time since knowing who Omar Sharif was. It was great seeing him in the film

"Are you sure it was a book? Are you sure it wasn't nothing?"
"Oh yeah."

Th funniest part of his big scene is when Olga whispers to him, "You Frenchman are so romantic!" and then he does a witty impersonation of Maurice Chevalier singing "Thank Heaven For Little Girls". I think Sharif did another movie with Blake Edwards, but I can't remember which one at the moment.

"What I don't understand is how we're going to stay alive this winter."

The movie is "The Tamarind Seed" (1974). I don't know it, but I found out through the "credited alongside" function of IMDb.

Hmmm?

If you have ever seen the soundtrack album for this film you will know that the score for that scene is actually called "Along Came Omar".

Sometimes big names stars would happily do small or cameo roles in movies because they loved the project, and just wanted to be a part of the madness, or at the request of the director who they might be good friends with. I am thinking of movies like "Around the world in 80 days" and "Casino Royale" (the John Huston version).

...it's alright, Ma, if I can't please him
