The movie references in the cartoon sequence

I'm surprised the movie references in the cartoon title sequence included Batman. Batman was more a comic book or TV character than a movie character in 1976. He first appeared on the big screen in kiddie movie serials in the 1940s and then in a cheapie spin-off of the 1966 TV series that did weak business. It wasn't until Tim Burton's 1989 movie that Batman could truly be called a movie character.

It was almost as if Richard Williams—who made the animated sequences—anticipated Tim Burton and Christoper Nolan. Only now does Batman fit alongside Chaplin, Keaton, King Kong, Jaws, etc.

The 1966 series was extraordinarily popular, called "the biggest TV phenomenon of the mid-1960s". At the height of its popularity, it was the only prime-time television show other than Peyton Place to be broadcast twice in one week as part of its regular schedule, airing at 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays.

I think that answers your question.

TV, yes. If the title sequence was doing TV show parodies I wouldn't have been surprised. My point was that Batman was more of a comic book and TV phenomenon until Tim Burton and Christopher Nolan came along.

Lets put it this way. I was born in 1966. When this film was made if anyone had mentioned Batman to me that music is exactly what I would thought of.

Was "12 Angry Men" one of the sequences with all the pink panthers at the table?

IMDb no longer gets my endorsement.

Probably yes.

However Batman is not the only one. Although Hitchcock was a film director, the reference to him is specifically a reference to a TV show.
