Lesson in French Punctuation

The first scene of the hospital where Dreyfus is being treated shows a sign that says HOPITAL PSICHIATRIQUE. The accent ^, which goes over the O, is missing.

reply

holy crap.

reply

I thought that when you use capital letters in French you could forget about the accents - except É.

reply

If you're French, and literate, you don't need accents over capital letters. (Often, due to the capital letters' height, there is not enough room for accents.) Sort of like not needing vowel marks in semitic languages, unless you're still learning.

reply

it is psychiatrique not with an "i"
The two previous posters are correct, when in upper case there is no need for accents

reply

This post makes me sad for the OP.

I wish I was 'Fake shemp #3 !.

reply

You don't have to feel sad; I haven't used my French much since I visited Lourdes in 1975, so naturally it has gotten rusty.

Then you shouldn't try giving other people "lessons".
