Why was Omar Sharif's appearance uncredited?

As you may recall, he played the part of the Egyptian assassin who assassinated the Clouseau impostor who, in turn, had come to the hotel to kill the real Clouseau (and bedding the Russian assassin on the side)?

It has been a while since I last saw this movie. But if I remember correctly, Omar's character did not have any spoken lines in this movie. When I worked as a crew member on a major motion picture, I was told that actors who do not have spoken lines are not required to appear in the credits. They are considered the same as extras who also do not receive on-screen credit.

Actually, when he's in bed with the Russian spy, Omar did speak a few words.

He said (in a deliberately bad French accent) "Thank heavens for little girls!"

My people skills are fine. It's my tolerance of morons that needs work.

If a star has a very small role in a film they often prefer not to have their name in the credits - not least so as not to mislead the public into thinking they have a larger role.

^ This. Or they're ashamed.

This was a cameo appearance - a surprise appearance, in just one scene, by a well-recognized star, as a special treat for the audience. It would have been considered superfluous to have identified him in the credits, and would have spoiled a bit of the fun.
