FUTUREWORLD is an excellent candidate for a remake
Given today's advanced special effects and better CGI, FUTUREWORLD would be an excellent candidate for a 2010 or 2011 remake.
I liked FUTUREWORLD as distinct from WESTWORLD - an excellent prequel - as I agree with some people that oomparing the two is akin to comparing apples and oranges. Futureworld possessed a unique more advanced plot set in the future.
The problem is that FUTUREWORLD is now 'dated'. There was no way for the screenwriter and director to foretell 21st century technological advances such as the: personal computer, iPod, iPad, digital cameras, USB drives, CDs and DVDs, personal cell telephones, flat screen televisions and computer monitors, the list goes on. I can think of several innovative technologies that have already come and gone, the laser disc and the miniature, hand-held color television.
Upcoming technologies and concepts include: enhanced or augmented reality, holographic technical displays (already shown on a television commercial), and a few others.
Imagine what a high-tech fantasy a FUTUREWORLD remake could offer! And I would make this an R-rated movie. I would push the envelope of the sexual service artifical humans using the concept from 'Alien' and 'Aliens'. The original plot is still usable. I would however, eliminate the distracting and useless Yul Brynner dream sequence, or at least greatly modify it or shorten it or add a R-rated sexual element. I'd choose an actress much different in character and personality than Blythe Danner. I'd strength her character development as well.
Lastly, for the android Japanese samurai, I would hire REAL Asian stuntactors, not white guys with the laughable rubber polymer fake eyelids! How hard could it have been to have found some Asian guys in Los Angeles! Also make sure their Japanese period clothing is accurate, too?
