If Marian had not...*spoiler*

*spoiler*

...gone back into the house at the end, would they have escaped do you think?

"I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus."
"Didn't he discover America?"
"Penfold, shush."

reply

Yes, I do think they would've escaped. I have seen this film many times and know what is going to happen each time, but I still scream "No! Don't go back in there" in my head.

I've been waiting for you, Ben.

reply

Agreed -- or if they just went in together.

"Family Power" saved the Freemont family on Poltergeist -- surely Marion's rescuing Davey from the pool was evidence of the bond of family --

They may have even had a chance if Ben went back in WITH Marion --0r or all three of them together.

Of course, even then, Marion would have made Ben and Davey wait outside Ms. Allardyce's room, and we'd pretty much had the same ending.

I totally agree. They were never going to leave that house. Oliver Reed and the son tried leaving during the storm and were prevented. Karen Black went back into the house and became part of the other family. Had she not something else would have happened.

reply

Yeah they probably would've made it but then again you never know. The house had previously perfected Ben and Davey's escape.

reply

I think they would have because if there was a very strong chance that they would be held back by the ghost(s) then it would not have pulled Marian to walk back. She seemed intent on going and seemed to have been possessed again at the end.

reply

Yes, but that would have made for a lousy ending to a horror film - Ha!

reply

No, Marian even said they ARE leaving the house today and they truly DID. All 3 of them DIED. Well, the husband and son did and Marian lost her soul, so they all really DID leave that day and Marian knew it even before it happened. She was clearly possessed and it had no intention of loosening its grip on her until the possession was completed.

reply

The novel ended differently, and according to to the IMDB trivia, Dan Curtis hated the original ending. He went on to write his own finale for the film and it's very similar to what he did for Night of Dark Shadows.
