The old lady

I've seen this film a few times and I've always wondered was there an old lady? Does the female of each family become the old lady?

Any thoughts???

Its a bit confusing I agree. There IS a spirit of Mother, & it possesses one female member of the newest family.
But I think eventually 'Mother' loses her energy & dies off or vanishes.
Thus, why they need a new family to restore the house & Mother.

"I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus."
"Didn't he discover America?"
"Penfold, shush."

Yeah the new mother would die eventually. seems mother spirit was stuck at 85.
while whoever her spirit has Possessed is human. so eventually that body would age and die. she Possessed much younger women, in their 30's I assume.
and had a few decades to live. explaining why Roz said 'An 85-year-old woman who could pass for 60' explaining two things. Roz said an old gal? meaning Elizabeth. you wouldn't mind having an old gal around? Mothers spirit needed a still young woman.

and why 'the old lady' despite being grey and bent. had a smooth face!

she was in the body of a 36-year-old. I assume this was filmed while Karen Black was around 36. I liked how they gave her the posture, grey hair and facial expressions of an elderly woman. while not actually aging her face with sags and wrinkles.

So who's the tray of food for? I never liked this movie. They should have staved the old hag.

-In my mind, Christopher Reeve will always be Superman.-
