Question about Buttermaker and Amanda

They didn't say this, but were they stepfather and stepdaughter? Buttermaker asked Amanda how her mother was doing and Amanda complained about how horrible he was in front of her and mentioned that he wasn't her father.

Buttermaker and Amanda's mother never married, so Buttermaker couldn't be her stepfather.
