Lost Championship game.

How is it the Bears lost the championship game in the first movie but in the second movie the were the California champs?

reply

More than likely they won it all the following year. Where as the year before they did not.

I believe in the novel version (which I believe was just a paper companion to the movie, with the same quotes and everything), they set it up that the Yankees had a chicken pox outbreak, and couldn't participate. Haven't seen the sequel in many years.

reply

Yeah, there are a lot of things in the sequel that don't make any sense. The sequel is basically an ultimate 1970's boy's fantasy movie.

For one the premise is completely absurd. As if these kids could just drive from L.A. to Houston without any parental supervision.

Also, why would a second place team from a small league in suburban L.A. be the "California Champs"

A California champion team would be an All Star team made up of the best players from that particular league. The only players that were good enough to make an All Star team would be Kelly and Amanda and Amanda (Tatum O'neil) isn't even in the sequel.

Also, some of these kids are 13-17 years old, well past the age of little league.

Those are all good points.

Didn't they all tell their parents that they had a coach going with them? I thought they got some "simple" type guy to act as their coach when the parents dropped them off.

reply

I think they originally get rid of their new coach and then they get that "simpleton" groundskeeper to head the trip.

Again, that they could go from L.A. to Houston by van with just that groundskeeper and all the parents agreeing is ridiculous. Also, they never seem to find out about the story of their new coach. Then the parents don't even wait for the van to leave.

It's a boy's fantasy movie so you just take it at that.

reply

True. It's not meant to really be picked apart or analyzed. Just like a lot of movies.

BTW, I don't think the groundskeeper drove them to Houston. Kelly drove the van. Yet another little thing that did not seem likely.

reply

Yeah, I know Kelly drove the van to Houston. The Simpleton groundskeeper was just a scam by the kids because they parents obviously wouldn't allow Kelly Leak to drive the van across country.

I think there is even a scene where Ahmad's older brothers are laughing because they understand the scam the Bears are trying to pull.
