why is the coach SO mean ??

I mean damn, I know it must have been for his character development not to give words of encouragement or compliment his players until the end but wow. I never had a coach yell at me for swinging at a pitch or telling one player to take everything.

And the part where Amanda asks him to hang out and he yells "I dont want your company!" SOOOOOOOO mean. when she started crying I wanted to cry too.

Anyway loved this movie reguardless.

He has no life and lives it in a bottle/can. That's why.

reply

Because he's a nasty old drunk

I'm a bad movie masochist!

reply

He knows that he could only hold Amanda back. He loves her and he doesn't want to hurt her by being in her life, so he tries to push her away.

Annnnnnnd, he's a drunken bum.

I agree with Naeki1. it's clear buttermaker has feelings for her, as is evidenced by his tears after she walks away. what was he supposed to do? become a surrogate father to his ex-girlfriends kid? he knew he was a poor role model and she would be better off not hanging around him outside of baseball. He tried to blow her off nicely but she wasn't taking no for an answer, so he had to be mean in the "cruel to be kind" sort of way and push her away for her own good. it hurt him to do it though, which speaks to his character.

The film makers were making a very pointed commentary on idiot adults who get wrapped up in 'winning' at kids sports and forget the point is to let the kids have fun and learn the game.

Buttermaker, Turner, Whitewood, the league commissioner, and the parents in the stands were all part of the same commentary about 'sports parents'.

reply

The producers wanted to present the little league scene as it was and still is, warts and all.

The '70s weren't that long ago, but things were different then. Hitting children was still acceptable to many. I don't think it was illegal in most states.

Children, on many occasions, need a good beating.

Because Roy Turner coaches winners.

reply

Many youth coaches are complete a-holes. They prefer winning over losing, but that is not their priority. Their priority is bossing children around and having their butts kissed. I am not joking. They are really sick.

reply

Hmmmm..... I didn't know Barack Hussein Obama is a youth coach. Who knew?

They prefer winning over losing

KIDS prefer winning over losing. it was adults with an agenda who stepped in and decided to have games without scores and make sure every kid gets a trophy.

my son was 6 and playing baseball. at the end of the season, he got a trophy and a medal on a ribbon. i tried to play it up for him, and he looked at me like i was stupid and said "what did we get this for? we got beat?"

Buttermaker and Paul Newman's character in 'Slapshot' are two of my favorite movie characters.
