The cool, calm Paranski shift!

I've always loved this scene but I don't really understand what's going on, why does Carl look so confused?

"And then I was being chased my an improperly filled in bubble screaming 'None of the above!' ".

reply

Because almost all of the players on the field have shifted to their right (Carl's left) because Buttermaker knew he could only hit the ball to left field so by putting almost everyone on that side, this increases the possibility someone will catch the ball when he hit it there.

jrs-8 is correct. It was called the "Cool Carl Kananski Shift."

"Cool, calm" is how the closed captions have it. If you watch the movie with them on, there are several other such mistakes. Such as when Turner calls out "Crybaby!" at Buttermaker, the caption reads something like "Go, Bobby!"

yeah, I always took this as showing their was some benefit of having buttermaker as coach. since he had semi-pro experience he would have been able to teach the kids some stuff that the other arm-chair wannabe coaches would not think of. good scene, great movie

"If you hate it when people post signatures they are 100% proud of and try to get others to join them, and are 100% proud of it, copy this and make it your signature"

Buttermaker as coach? NO! It was from having Ogilvie as team statistician! Don't you remember the scene where he's going over the Yankee lineup with Amanda, telling her who can hit what? That's why they did the Paranski shift - because of Ogilvie's keen baseball analytical skills.

I want the doctor to take your picture so I can look at you from inside as well.

Once in awhile, you'll see a major league team pull an infield shift to the right or the left. Notably, teams tried to use it against Ted Williams, shifting to his right as Williams was a left-handed pull hitter. Williams was so good, he could still knock it through.
