Gotta love the 70's!

--When men over 40 were burly, grizzled, hairy, short-tempered and could hit, slap, or throw beer in a kids face and put them in their place
--When boys could fight, curse, and spout racial epithets without being suspended or it making newspaper headlines
--When a 14 year old boy could go around on a motorcycle by himself, smoke, and give adults the finger if they didn't like him
--When women with short hair and wearing sun visors and running baseball teams were obviously masculine, but not questioned
--When a coach could smoke cigars or drink around the kids without them saying anything or being offended
--When a socially awkward kid could be picked on without there being calls to the parents and enrolling the perpetrators in sensitivity training
--When the kids could be out all day with the coach without it turning into a red flag for the parents
--When air hockey was one of the most wonderful things in an arcade
--And finally, you either won or lost. If you lost, tough titty! You had your character built!

- when a guy could drink while driving a car filled well over capacity with underage kids not buckled in.

Yep, my best friends dad was a drinker and a half and I remember him taking us to functions with a glass of whiskey and ice in the car and not even attempting to conceal it! And we didn't wear seatbelts, either, in fact, I never did until my dad took defensive driving about 1984 and I got made fun of in high school for wearing one!

Can't argue with any of those points. You really do notice the difference when watching the movie today. With the over coddling and off the charts wussification of kids these days, you can't help but long for the 70's or the 80's. Nowadays, they have leagues that don't keep score so kids' feelings aren't hurt when they lose! Is that sick or what?

reply

AMEN to that!!

How terrible it must be to be a kid in today's lame world.

reply

Yep, it really is amazing how much has changed, and not in a good way. I miss the days when everybody wasn't looking for reasons to be offended. We've become a population of pussies and crybabies.

reply

This pretty much describes the 80s too. I was born in 71 so I grew up in both decades.

reply

I hear ya!! Don't forget when your parents could give you a swift kick in the a$$ without it being called child abuse and kids wore their pants around their waste and not their knees.

reply

Yes, I believe that as comical as your post may seem that the country was significantly freer back then.

Adam Carolla does a great bit about how less free we have become by way of a typical California public beach. On such a beach, one is prohibited from smoking cigarettes, drinking beer, making a bonfire, lighting or even possessing fireworks, walking a dog, playing frisbee or throwing a football, cooking with a grill, etc. Sound fun?
