Comedy or drama he was so ne of the greatest actors alive.

Matthau's droopy bloodhound-like face and the expressions that came from it were totally unique. There are so many laugh out loud moments in this film that derive from him simply giving that patented look, that incredulous stare of "wtf is going on here?" A few examples: when Toby told him he had two Mexican kids on the team who didn't speak any English, when Amanda informed him she'd be getting a bra soon, and numerous times that he winced in the California sun after taking taking a slug from his Jim Beam laced can of Bud.

I think the appeal of Matthau is that he reminds everyone of their drunk uncle. And I mean that in only the most endearing ways.
