Will the Criterion release be Uncut?

Will it contain the scene involving oral sex and semen?

reply

Here's hoping!!

Yes it is.

It even features the notorious scene (in the States it's notorious, that is), involving the kids.

And it even has some deleted scenes.

reply

Great. It's been a while since I've seen this. The copy I saw had that notorious scene with the kid but I don't recall if it had that other scene. Hope to pick this up soon. Should be interesting.

reply

Well, this Criterion version definitely does have the oral sex scene, with the semen shot.

This version, along with its deleted scenes and so on, is probably the most complete version yet. And it looks gorgeous, too.

reply

Not only does the Criterion have the oral sex/semen shot, it's even alluded to in its cover art. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/images/B001PYD0LQ/

But that scene was in the Fox/Lorber edition too, though.

I don't remember the "scene with the kids" at all.

reply

Yeah the scene with kids was previously cut from all US prints.

Otherwise, the film has always been pretty much uncut in the US.

I had the old Fox Lorber VHS tape from the early 90s, and even it is missing the child scene. It had everything else, though.

For those who don't know, the scene I'm referring to is a 56 second sequence where the female Sada character is playfully chasing around two completely naked young children (probably four or five year olds). They are giggling, and it is all very playful. Then, Sada suddenly gets all entranced and serious looking, then grabs the young boy by his penis and scrotal sack. He yells out, "Ouch, that hurts! That hurts!" He starts to cry and look back at the little girl, who is watching and confused. Then, it cuts away to the next scene.

In all previous US versions, it cut from the scene right before this to the scene directly after it. I suppose the US distributors were always weary of this sequence for the obvious reasons. But, as usual, Criterion has really gone out on a limb here, and included it. I hope they don't get heat later for it.

reply

I think Criterion could withstand whatever heat thrown its way. The company's made its reputation for uncut, uncensored films -- think of the controversy over its release of SWEET MOVIE (though Facets Video released it years beforehand, with a little bit of the same controversy).

Then again, they missed a scene of SALO that the BFI edition has, so.

Nevertheless, they really are a plucky set of staunch characters!

reply

Indeed.

Criterion releases the most controversial films in history.

"Salo", "Sweet Movie", "In the Realm of the Senses", "The Last Temptation of Christ", "Do the Right Thing", etc.,etc.

reply

Which scene in SALO did the Criterion version left out ?

reply

The "alternate versions" list for SALO describe it thus:

The Criterion DVD omits a short 25-second sequence during the first wedding ceremony, where one of the masters quotes a poem by Gottfried Benn. The sequence is intact on the R2 BFI DVD.

Criterion discusses the scene, and posts a video from the BFI edition, here:

What did Criterion miss on Salo? They also distribute, unfortunately, a cut version of Kwaidan.

Go to Criterion and ask them to work on Satyajit Ray films, a good Kwaidan rerelease.

reply

I have a Fox\Lorber realese DVD which is 98 min in NTSC format and includes kid secne that filmscholar35 refered to.
Timing : from 54:18 to 55:12

reply

Really? Well, they must have restored that for the Fox Lorber DVD.

The previously available Fox Lorber vhs, which is what I had, and previous US theatrical versions, were missing that scene.

reply

With the prices they charge, if they offered mutilated cuts no one would buy them.

The cover in my copy says 102 minutes. New, restored, high-definition digital transfer of the complete, uncensored version.

reply

By the way the Criterion DVD does offer both fellatio scenes, including the one with semen, the Egg scene, the Naked Tikes scene and, most definitely, the Final Mutilation scene.

reply

The version I have includes the scene with the kids appearing naked, but when the woman grabs the boy the camera angle changes to from the waist up. The picture quality is lesser when this happens, so I would guess they zoomed in during the scene instead of editing it out. Also, whem the boy is talking, supposedly saying "It hurts! It hurts!" there are no subtitles. That's the only scene where the subtitles are missing. Is the grab on-screen in the Criterion Collection?

reply

Yes.

reply

Time for me to upgrade from the Fox Lorber version (even though the FL version is uncut, too). ^_^

reply

*Possible spoiler ahead*

I don't think you could ever call a movie like this, with its ending and all, "uncut."
