some questions, after having seen the film

I love Jap movies and i am starting Jap literature,too...I was surprised watching this movie, and i want to ask a couple of things.

A)What is exactly the role of a Geisha?I am confused if she is just an entertainer or...something more.

B)What is the relationship between the two sexes?I mean, the man in this movie had very weak connections with his wife( he was absent for a long time, without giving any reasons)

C)The sexual actibity is so explicit indeed???The couple was having sex in front of the geishas, and overall both sides didn't seem to bother, as if making love before their eyes was something natural...

Thanks in advance!

In Japan at that time , before the war , people didn't marry for love. All marriages were arranged (it is called omiai).
I never saw this movie but I've heard about it. In Japan it is still censored. I cant reply your other questions but thi one is obvious to me I think. My guess it that if the couple married through omiai , they didn't really care about each other. Somtimes omiai could be a good match but somtimes it didn't work.

Especially marriages between an older rich guy and a young girl. Many such marriages were back then somewhat arranged in the West also.

Also, Japanese society was even more patriarchal than our own. Wife's mission was not to ask where his husband had been.

Geisha are artists, entertainers, etc. Some could be persuaded to be more for a price but it wasn't common and if I recall correctly it was heavily frowned upon.
