Sada's tattoo

Sada has a tattoo of what appears to be a scorpion on her earlobe. Can anyone tell me if there is some kind of cultural meaning or symbolism attached to this?

reply

no idea, but it was hot ;)

very hot!

i believe in japanese culture it was common for women who were concubines to the yakuza to be tattooed so that it would be known that they belonged to someone.

Interesting...

I don't know about the symbolism, but in the Criterion release dvd extras, it is told that the tattoo actually belongs to the actress who plays Sada, not specifically for the film.

That's right. I think it was her costar Fuji who mentioned it. He said implied it might have had something to do with her working in "underground theater" for whatever that's worth.

reply

I always thought it was just a mark to signify she was a servant or slave and had something to do with who owned her.

Isn't scorpion a DEADLY animal?

I recall something about her husband being a Bankrupt and that she was having to pay off the debt by being a call girl. She rubbed her ear lobe and I was wondering if the tatt is the mark of the person who is owed the debt - like brand?
