I just got around to seeing ITROTS after all these years **SPOILERS**

I was pretty impressed with it as an artistic endeavor, and would rate it 7 out of 10. It gets the most points for art direction and cinematography. Some of the scenes were just beautiful blends of color and no color if you know what I mean. That struck me right away, and I'm not someone with much talent in the visual arts - as in none. But I'm out of my depth here, so I should move on to my main point.

I didn't think the film was about sex as much as it was about addiction. It reminded me of films about drug or alcohol addicts caught in desires they can't master. You have the someone who is the enabler, being drawn in deeper and deeper by the other one who is insatiable and on a speeding train bound for disaster and obliteration.

Quickly Kichizo became more helpless and Sada more demonic as her obsession and addiction increased, and they both seemed to know that there wasn't any escape for her, and therefore no escape for him. She could not resist his sex, and he could not resist her.

It's well worth seeing, but for my money, once is enough.

I really loved your post and your interpretation. I felt the same way too about the movie and it bugged me how some people remembered it for the explicit sex scenes.

That's very nice - thanks. I don't often have an unusual insight into a film, but I thought that was worthwhile.

i agree with your interpretation. another movie with a similar theme...though without the lush visual beauty...is crash (1996) with james spader. the message board there discusses how the sexual addiction experienced by the characters's fetish can lead only to destruction. it's a profoundly disturbing movie, as is this one. what's so disturbing is that it's true.
