Pretty much.

Great show. I'd rather watch Quincy than all that endless NCIS crap.

reply

To be fair. There are notable episodes that dispense with the formula.

There's the one where Quincy and Sam are held hostage by a mob don (John Vernon) who wants them to determine the source of his terminal poisoning.

And the one where Quincy and Astin just shout at each other for virtually the entire episode non-stop.

Sam takes on the Yakuzas.

Some other show where the boss never agrees. Maybe Tartaglia?

reply

That's tv for ya!

Most shows are formulaic. If new ideas were required for each episode of a series then 99 percent of all series would be cancelled after 6 episodes. Its just more tolerable when it is a formula that has personal appeal than not having one. Look at all the guys who hoot at the hottie that is in each episode of Married with Children.

There are stupid British TV shows that are definitely formulaic, they cover the same basic plots and catchphrases over and over again, and are REALLY FUCKING ANNOYING!!

Two examples I can cite that are popular with Americans:

'Allo! 'Allo!
"You stupid woman!"
"Listen very carefully, I shall say this only once!"
"Good moaning!"

and

Keeping Up Appearances
"The Bucket Residence, the Lady of the House Speaking!"
"Richard!"
And all those stupid double-takes and reactions she does

Quincy, by comparison, follows a pattern, but it is always so compelling and entertaining.

The good shows always make you forget about the frequent repetition. I can forgive it with Keeping Up Appearances as I enjoy Hyacinth getting her nose rubbed in her shortcomings week after week. I've always wished there was an American version of it as we have plenty of self-important people here that need to be taken down a peg or two. But yes KUA does go to an extreme in terms of formula.

It's strange the Americans never made their own version of Keeping Up Appearances, they've remade many of our UK shows, to mixed to poor results.
