Could We Squeeze in Ian McKellen et al Somewhere?
I was just thinking - this series had pretty much the top actors of a generation -- except it would have been nice to fit in Ian McKellen, Judi Dench, and maybe Maggie Smith in somewhere? ;-)

shareI'll try with the characters that aren't in the series but have minor part in the book:
Ian McKellen - Gaius Licinius Maecenas (friend of Augustus and Agrippa)
Maggie Smith - Urgulania (Livia's friend and grandmother of Urgulanilla)
Judi Dench - not really sure
"The trick, William Potter,is not minding that it hurts."
Why? Quality actors of course, but the serial didn't really need them.
shareI agree but I answered to carlc last night for fun.
But on the other hand, I wouldn't mind if Maecenas had cameo in the first episode. He, Augustus and Agrippa always seemed to me as an inseparable trio - Maecenas was intermediary between Octavian and Marcus Vipsanius when relations were cold.

Well,I suppose they would have been much younger at the time, and we're talking about their past selves... I agree with casting them as people in the books but not the existing series. Ian might have made a fine Seneca. I could see Maggie as Lesbia, and Judi as Julilla, or vice versa.
shareI could see Ian playing a good Sejanus even though Patrick Stewart was brilliant
