Julia's male slaves

It is strongly suggested that Julia bedded some of her male slaves. Surely it would have been very unusual for such a high born Lady to sleep with a common slave? And as she seemed to have plenty of Romans happy to go with her, wouldn't it have been 'scraping the barrel' to have slaves?

reply

Plautius claimed authenticity about the list, so her 'scrapping the barrel' was probably true.
Julia bedding slaves is no less unusual than her bedding every man in sight. If the slave was handsome and built, than I doubt class was much of a barrier to cross.

Slaves were used as "sex toys" by either sex for Romans and in other slave civilizations -- just as the US south also had this culture of sex slavery for either sexes, although usually it's more "male owner / female slave." Even later in "I Claudius" it's mentioned how Tiberius and Caligula use sex slaves; so I guess it's implied what's good for the gander is good for the geese?

Julia slept with everyone she fancied. Who better than a hot slave? He couldn't say no, and he had to keep his mouth shut or be tortured and killed.

reply

From the looks of some of those black bucks surrounding her, they had what she needed for her sexual prowess, even though the way she was made up and her whole attitude was a major turn-off for me. However, I'd wonder who'd win in a similar contest that Messalina had later with "the whore of Rome".

reply

And so what would happen if a slave made advances to her?

reply

Men had sex with slaves regularly. It's not at all insane that Julia would take similar liberties.

The one thing I can't beat... Competition.

I also seem to recall a line in the book stating that she didn't fool around until she knew she was pregnant by her husband (Agrippa) so she was smart enough to make sure that all five of her children were his.

The Fabio Principle: Puffy shirts look best on men who look even better without them.

reply

Not necessarily. Bedding slaves or prostitutes was often considered much more acceptable for a married person than having an affair with someone of their own class. This is because such individuals did not represent a threat to the family unit that a similar affair with a peer might.

Interesting answers. I wonder then, on the presumption the slaves' sex lives were probably regimented, was it quite the privilege to be fundamentally raped. I say this strictly for the males with the likes of Julia.
Sex is sex after all, but it can't be much fun with a partner who has the power to tell you exactly what to do in bed?
Also, wouldn't she have felt a little embarrassed the next day when a man she'd just slept with was pouring her wine or fanning her?
