I heard on a newspaper in the U.K. that Pete Townsend sayed that tommy shall rise again now my question to you is should there be a remake and if so who should direct it?

reply

So I guess your refering to the nineteen seventies version that starred Roger Daltrey. Bad taste ingore... Not to be snob man I ignore all trolls and the original theatrical Tommy was better than your entire family!!!!!!

reply

Roger Daltrey did such a great job durring this whole movie. I mean he just sat there doing nothing not speaking and i was like wtf is wrong with this guy. If they did then they should have somone which could do it and still give the kinda kick ass attitude.

also id love to see a remake but if they do then roger better play the dad of tommy that would be so kick ass

reply

There aren't really any big rock stars anymore so I think a remake would be lacking. Daltry's too old to play Tommy so you lose something right there. It's interesting to think about how to cast a remake however. Who would play the mother, Jessica Simpson?

reply

Vpm321, you should be shot for even suggesting that that idiot Jessica Simpson should have any kind of connection to a remake... let alone play Tommy's mother! First of all she doesn't have the right look or voice and second of all SHE IS AN IDIOT SHE WOULDN'T UNDERSTAND IT ONE BIT! That's why she is in brainless movies like Dukes and Employee of the month... because you don't have to think to understand them, thus perfect for Jessica. Can you even try to imagine her trying to do any of the scenes that Ann-Margaret did?! It would be awful and embarrassing just to watch. So all i'm really trying to say is that if you have any hopes at all of being a casting director someday, you should flush those dreams right down the toilet.

reply

I know that this has been done in production on stage for years, so in that sense it has been remade. As to a movie remake?

It would absolutely have both Pete and Roger's blessing if not involvement.

reply

I hope that they don't remake the MOVIE version but the STAGE version. I think the stage orchestrations and plot would make a more cohesive film that the Ken Russell film. Therefore, rock stars wouldn't be needed. Many Broadway stars of today HAVE rock and gospel voices like Adam Pascal, Idina Menzel, haha any one who has been in Rent. Matt Caplan, Cary Shields. Making a movie of the stage version of "Tommy" would be GREAT!

reply

Ooh, the stage one would be a good movie! And the plot's probably more accessible to an audience today - it won't become dated as fast as the movie did.

Good idea!

reply

there not making a remake
Townshend was talking about the new play in New York (i think thats where its being done)
and the possibility on a 2009 tour to mark the 40th aniversery, there wont be a new movie..

reply

I stand by what I said originally. Adapting the stage version to film would be pretty cool. It's easily the most solid of the versions, and it would be pretty accessible because of that.

Well, ça c'est 'The Meaning of Life'.

reply

I think little Jimmy Urine should play tommy hes an actual rock star the rest your naming suck.....

reply

Nah, I prefer the original version much more. Im not too big on remakes.

reply

Remakes are a tricky thing, it is either really good or way different. Maybe all he meant by saying that it will come around again is that a new generation will discover it.

Unfortunatley I don't think the right kind of talent needed for a Tommy movie exists anymore. One person who I would want in a current remake would be Elizabeth Hurley as the mother. If she couldn't get it together as a singer I'd have her mime to Kate Bush's singing or something like that. Someone else mentioned Catherine Zeta Jones for this role which would be pretty decent, and she can sing.

I prefer thinking of what roles I would cast different for the '75 version. Roger, Ann-Margret and Keith Moon can stay but the others I would recast:

The Lover - Peter Gabriel
Cousin Kevin - Alice Cooper
The Acid Queen - either Grace Slick (she wouldn't have been adverse to singing about acid) or still have Tina Turner in that role
The Hawker - Paul Rogers
The Specialist - David Bowie
The Pinball Wizard - Stevie Wonder (like Pete wanted)
Sally Simpson - I would have cast a teen in this role, not a kid, Kate Bush would have been about 15 at the time so I'd have her in

reply

That would be gre- oh, wait!

Stevie Wonder is DEAD.

reply

No, he isn't.

reply

Although a remake will be awesome, it probably won't be as good as the original itself.

reply

Should there be a remake!!!!!

No. The original is a fantastic piece of work, besides which I do not think using the same storyline the film could be presented as a new release now.

Better to regret something you did, than something you didn't do!

reply

NO REMAKE!!!! EVER!!!! The one that is, is already great! Why spoil it?

I am a huge fan of the who. they are one of my favorite bands and Tommy is one of the best albums ever. but...
I really can't get into the movie. It completely destroyed my perspective of the album. Every time i listen to the album i can't help think of the film. I didn't like the plot changes or the lyric changes or the music changes. while watching, i wanted to sing along to my favorite songs, (sally simpson, 1921, amazing journey, pinball wizard, ect) and enjoy the film but it was just to different from the album. Plus it was a little to cheesy for me. of course this is my opinion.

That being said, for the first time in my life i think a remake is actually a good idea. It would help introduce the genius of tommy and the who to a new generation and, if done properly and with the right cast, could be a great movie. Keep the story and lyrics the same as in the album and try to use as much of the original music as possible. And if they involved Pete and Roger, I think it could be pulled off.

wait 10 years and I will direct a remake of this movie

Remaking the movie would be pointless, because The Who wouldn't be in it. It defeats the purpose. The original wasn't perfect, but...it's got The Who, and The Who were part of creating it. Doing it any other way would be...wrong.

...yeah, the idea of a remake is kind of bewildering to me...

I believe that there should be another version of this movie, but I'm not really on bored with calling it a remake. My ideal version of this movie would be much different, much shorter, more elemental, and more similar to the original album. It would also cast people in the roles who actually belong in the roles. C'mon-- we all know we hated Tina Turner in this movie.

I think some interesting choices for directors could be Peter Jackson (what? I can see it!), Bryan Singer (he could do something interesting with it), or maybe Julie Taymor (it would make a nice follow-up to "Across the Universe," don't ya think?)

Since I would rate the original album a 10 by this site's standards and this movie only got an 8 from me, I'd say they definitely need to try again.
