Does anyone know

Why they changed the concept of the father killing the lover (in self-defense) to having the lover kill the father for no reason other than the fact he found them in bed together. The broadway show went back to that orginal concept so why was it changed? I like this film but didn't like that change or the fact that in the end both the mom and lover (now his step-dad) were killed by the mob of people.

Ken Russell and Mark Kermode go into this a bit on the audio commentary on the Region 2 DVD. It just works a lot better from a dramatic and cinematic perspective. Seeing a person he barely knows getting killed is less likely to cause the mental trauma as seeing his own father murdered. I think Russell was right.

The trauma in the original version wouldn't so much being the killing of a stranger as it would be--OMG, my dad just came out of nowhere and killed somebody, and he and my mom are asking me to keep quiet about it.

Which still likely wouldn't be as traumatic as seeing your father, who yes you barely knew, but somehow you still KNOW is your true father, being murdered by your 'uncle' or whatever, and THEN them telling you that it never happened.
