Just because something is controlled by corporations doesn't mean its capitalist. Or rather, just because something is capitalist it doesn't mean those in control want to encourage more competition. The thing with capitalism is that it is a competion with winners and losers, with no real rules. The 'game' of capitalism can end in an oligarchic, dictatorial, monopolistic freeze, wherein by self interest of those 'capitalist' winners, free competition (capitalism) becomes undesirable. In essence, capitalism destroys itself.
The thing is, the corporations are excellent at hiding their power, the world becomes an image where everybody is supposedly equally in control (because they roughly have the same material things, and have the same chance at winning Rollerball). Therefore, by the image they present of a collectivist society, where you trust and support your ruler, the message that individaul effort is futile, becomes desirable to the elite.
