The Predominance of the Orange Color Palette . .

. . . gives this film a very modern look.

Just my latest observation upon the latest re-watch of this classic.

Orange was a very popular color in the seventies. I currently live in a place with the burnt-orange shag carpeting from that decade.

reply

Yeah. I remember (as a kid).

With teal and orange being all the rage these days . . .

Also, the 70's look is kind of in these days, so ya got that.

reply

Yes, the movie is very orange.
But why was it chosen?

Seems related to the exalting of violence, as in A Clockwork Orange.

I think it just fit better with the contemporary (1970s) modern color schemes and made it easier to use commercial furnishings to dress the sets and fill in the backgrounds.

By using modernist elements from the real world of the era, it also makes the future that is portrayed seem that much more real. You walk downtown and you see a modern building with modernist furnishings and then when you watch this movie it looks like your real-world modern future is the future.
