A question about the ending. POSSIBLE SPOILER

I've been trying to find the name of a film I saw on UK TV in the early 90s and have been directed here.

Does this film involve a cop who becomes friends with the criminal he's sent to investigate undercover and does it have a shootout at the end where the cop and the criminal are together on top of an elevator fighting against the police?

Dear Gular-Scute: I think this is the movie you're looking for. It was released on video in the UK on Warner Home Video back in the 1980's. (I have it).

Good movie.

Doesn't have a tacked-on happy ending, either.

Thanks Invasion, I must get my grubby little hands on a copy. I was struck by the unpatronising, honest ending too.
