Just buy the MGM vhs of 'REPORT TO THE COMMISSIONER' if you want to see it. I've got it. Good movie.
I hope this movie never comes out on DVD. It would be ruined by being digitized. Gritty '70s movies like this one are best viewed with a bit of VHS grain to add to the proceedings.
MGM released it in 1988 (at least that's the video version I have) and the picture quality of my tape is fine. Eminently watchable.
Definitely not a feel-good movie for those who like action movies with sappy endings.

I'm sure the filmmakers feel very differently.
"VHS grain" does nothing but mar and scar the director's and cinematographer's original vision for their movie. And unless your VHS is letterboxed, you're missing something like 25% of the original picture, due to cropping, panning and scanning.
You wouldn't put up with a movie that had a hum running through the entire soundtrack or had 25% of the dialogue missing, would you?
It's a motion picture. The pictures matter.
VHS is only "emminently watchable" to people who don't understand what they're looking at.

I watched it on broadcast late night TV this week, and they DID leave out twenty-five percent of the dialogue. All the four-letter words were cut, making it sometimes difficult to figure out what they were saying.
shareEven if the film is edited for the VHS release, to say <VHS is only "emminently watchable" to people who don't understand what they're looking at> is a bit snobbish.
shareYou will be happy to know that Report to the Commissioner was released on DVD May 16, 2011. I have been waiting for this to come out on DVD for years. Look for it on Amazon.

Report To The Commssioner is now available on Blu-ray disc. The disc is from Kino Lorber and is Zone A locked. The picture quality is excellent.
shareI'm watching the blu-ray now, borrowed it from the local library. It looks amazing. Never seen the movie before, tho I've known of it for many years. I vaguely remember the radio ads from when it played in theaters!
