Jack was horrible here. It seemed like he was angry at the director or frustrated about the heat the whole time. He was trying to do his detached "Chinatown" act, but it just seemed fake and hollow. I can't see how this is rated so high. Antonioni's alienation trilogy is infinitely better. Even his "Red Desert" and "Identification of a Woman" are better.

I would say someone like Sam Neill or Rupert Everett might have been better in Jack's role. John Malkovich, perhaps, since it has parallels to Sheltering Sky.
